Why does former VP keep in public eye?

Inquiring minds want to know. After all, a major policy speech on Iraq in San Francisco last week, followed today by a major policy speech on the economy in Washington sounds much more like the strategy of a presidential candidate than a former vice president. Granted, there's no rule against former vice presidents staying in the public eye, but you don't see it much. (Come on, when was the last time you saw Dan Quayle? Walter Mondale? It's been a while, and even longer since either gave a More

Another wake-up call for sluggish Volunteers

Was it me, or did anyone else feel like they were in a time warp Saturday, circa 1979? Seems Tennessee had a pretty good team that year, and a Knoxville newspaper columnist wrote a tongue-in-cheek article wondering exactly what a Rutger was. The Scarlet Knights were not amused, and neither was UT when it lost 13-7. Long-time fans must have thought about that as the Vols headed to the locker room fortunate to be down just 14-7 to a team rated 114th out of 117 Division I schools. More

Latest Bush principle: out with old, in with old

Make no mistake. President Bush is right. At least, that is, about the basic assumptions behind the new Bush doctrine. We are, as he says, living in a post-containment, post-deterrence, post-Cold War world. So why has the White House chosen to deal with this new reality by traveling back to the future to take on Saddam Hussein? It's Us vs. The Evil Empire all over again, only this time with a Middle Eastern accent. More
