Realtors show houses to their prospects every day. In most cases, there is a lockbox of some sort on or near the doorway that contains a key to the property. These lockboxes are commonly referred to as MLS boxes because in the early days they were purchased from the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) and the name stuck.
In order to gain possession of the key, each Realtor must own a keypad that fits into the lockbox and identifies the agent should there be a reason to learn the name of the person that showed the property.
In order to learn the whereabouts of the lockbox, the Realtor must call an appointment center, the listing office, or the listing agent and schedule an appointment. During those conversations, Realtors are exposed to the strangest requests and given ridiculous information.
