Health Care Council taps Cigarran as new chairman

The Nashville Health Care Council has named its board of directors for the '08-'09 year with Healthways founder Tom Cigarran taking over the chairman’s slot from Community Health Systems CEO Wayne Smith.

Smith, who succeeded Vanderbilt’s vice chancellor for medical affairs Harry Jacobson, has held the post since 2006. Serving as vice chairman will be Psychiatric Solutions CEO Joey Jacobs.

Along with Cigarran, other newly appointed board members serving three-year terms are Vic Campbell, a senior vice president with HCA; Jim Houser, president and CEO with Saint Thomas Health Services; and Healthways CEO Ben Leedle.

Renewing their three-year appointments were Jacobs, Specialty Care Service Group CEO Gary Brukhardt, Healthspring’s Herb Fritch and Brian Shipp of TennCare contractor AmeriGroup.

Other board appointments are as follows:

  • Teresa Sparks — CFO of Symbion and Leadership Health Care chair

  • Jim Bearden — CEO of Gresham, Smith & Partners
  • Dion Shiedy — a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers
  • Tom Stephenson — president and CEO of HMS
  • Bill Stitt — managing director with Deutsche Bank Securities
  • Riley Sweat — managing director with Raymond James
  • John Voigt — partner at Sherrard & Roe
