U.S. stock markets regained their footing Tuesday, bouncing back from Monday’s selling stampede with gains of about 5 percent.

At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 485 points, or 4.7 percent, to 10,851. The S&P 500 was up 5.3 percent at 1,165. Bank stocks led the way, with the KBW Bank Index jumping almost 16 percent.

Most of Middle Tennessee’s public companies followed the broader market higher. The day’s biggest local gainers were Advocat (+17.7 percent), Healthcare Realty (+10.4 percent) and Gaylord Entertainment (+8.8 percent).

Tennessee Commerce Bancorp and O’Charley’s, two other Nashville-area companies that saw big losses Monday, both rose more than 8 percent.

Notable losers on the day were Tractor Supply (-4.5 percent) and AmSurg (-2.9 percent). Brookdale Senior Living, one of the very few stocks to post gains Monday, gave up about 2 percent Tuesday.
