A joint venture arrangement between Metal Management Inc. and Houchens Industries Inc. is bringing the latest scrap metal technology to Nashville.

The 25-acre facility, to be located on the Cumberland River west of downtown and off of Linder Industrial Dr., is set to start processing metal in early 2006, according to Rob Larry, chief financial officer of Chicago-based Metal Management.

A joint-owned scrap paper processing facility has already been in operation on the site since fall of last year.

All types of scrap metal are to be processed at the site, but primarily the effort will involve taking complete automobiles or trucks, shredding them into pieces called granules, separating the valuable parts, sorting them, and then shipping out the respective product to the appropriate customers, Larry said.
