TMA promotes Miller to CEO

The Tennessee Medical Association announced today Russ Miller has been promoted to chief executive officer after having served as executive vice president.

Miller is a veteran Nashville-based public relations and marketing professional, and has been with the TMA since 1987. As EVP he directed the association’s strategic plan, information technology, corporate communications, marketing and sales management. He replaces Don Alexander, who is retiring after 40 years with the TMA and serving as CEO since 1995.

“The TMA is undergoing internal changes to allow our organization to continue to meet the challenges of our rapidly changing healthcare system,” Miller said in a release. “We are focused on the future needs of our members and the patients they serve. “

In addition, the TMA has promoted the following staff:

* Yarnell Beatty will become vice president of advocacy after having served as director 
of legal and government affairs. He will direct all legal, regulatory, legislative and political action committee activities. Previously an attorney with the state health‐related boards and the Tennessee Department of Health, Beatty joined the TMA in 2001.

* Brent Atkinson will become vice president of operations after having served as director of finance and administration since 2005. Atkinson will oversee all TMA accounting, human resources and operations.

* Ashley Cates has been named director of marketing, after previously serving as communications manager.

* Angie Madden will become director of practice solutions, expanding her duties from director of e‐health services. 

In addition, the TMA has hired the following:

* Michael Hurst will serve as director of business development, focusing on expanding the TMA’s spectrum of member services and products. He previously worked in the health care marketing 
and personal lines insurance industries as a business development executive.

* Katie Dageforde will serve as assistant general counsel with concentration in health insurance laws and 
the federal Affordable Care Act.

Sherrard & Roe promotes pair to member status

Attorneys Lisa Helton and Greg Pease have been named members of Sherrard & Roe, PLC, Tom Sherrard, founding member of the law firm, announced today.

Helton’s practice areas include estate and trust litigation, general and commercial litigation, landlord/tenant law, appellate practice, federal tax litigation, and representation of homeowners associations. 

Helton received her J.D. magna cum laude, with a concentration in advocacy and dispute resolution, from the University of Tennessee College of Law, where she was Order of the Coif, president of UT Law Women and a member of the Tennessee Law Review. Helton graduated summa cum laude from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a B.A. in the College Scholars Program with an emphasis in psychology, Spanish and theatre. She is a member of the Nashville, Tennessee and American bar associations, and a Barrister of the American Inns of Court, Harry Phillips Inn. 

Pease practices in the areas of general business and health care law. His experience extends across various industries including health care, manufacturing, electronic payment processing, business services, distribution and publishing. 

Pease received his J.D. cum laude from the University of Memphis, where he was editor-in-chief of the University of Memphis Law Review and was one of two recipients of the Dean’s Distinguished Graduate Award for the Class of 2004. 

Prior to attending law school, Pease held management positions with Leggett & Platt, Inc., a Fortune 500 diversified manufacturing company. He earned an M.B.A. from the University of Texas at Dallas and a B.A. in political science from the University of Georgia. Pease is a member of the Nashville, Tennessee and American bar associations and a member of the American Health Lawyers Association.

First Freedom recruits SVP

Lebanon-based First Freedom Bank has hired a veteran consumer banking executive to oversee its retail and mortgage businesses.

Kenny Beavers has joined First Freedom as senior vice president and director of retail banking. He has more than 35 years of experience and has long been based in Lawrenceburg. Most recently, he was consumer market manager at Capital Bank, the successor to Green Bank, for which he oversaw 28 branches in eight counties. Before that, he also worked for National Bank of Commerce and Boatmen’s Bank of Tennessee.

“This position demands a high level of responsibility and a uniquely capable individual to ensure the success of our operations,” said John Lancaster, president and CEO of six-year-old First Freedom. “Kenny is that individual. He is a professional community banker of the highest caliber and we are thrilled to have him on our team.”

Beavers, who will relocate to Wilson County, is a graduate of both the Mid-South School of Banking and the Tennessee School of Banking. A native of Lawrenceburg, he is the vice chairman of the Lawrenceburg Industrial Development Board and Treasurer of the Lawrence County Public Transportation Board, among other things.
