Alleged cop shooters plead 'not guilty'

The two men accused of shooting Metro Police Sgt. Mark Chesnut this summer were arraigned Tuesday morning before Davidson County Judge Seth Norman and both entered 'not guilty' pleas.

Joseph Jackson Jr. and Cortney Logan both entered pleas in Davidson County Criminal Court on charges stemming from the June 25 shooting, including attempted criminal homicide and evading arrest. Metro Police allege the men shot  Chesnut after he pulled them over on a routine traffic stop along Interstate 40 near Bellevue.

The men reportedly were on the run after Logan orchestrated a prison break for Jackson from the Delta Correctional Facility in Greenwood,  Miss., an institution run by Corrections Corporation of America.

According to police reports, Jackson approached Chesnut's patrol car as the officer was 'running' the  men's identification and shot him five times at close range.

Chesnut, who has recovered from his injuries, was not in court Tuesday.

Both defendants told Judge Norman that they could not afford lawyers. The court then appointed public defender Laura Getz to represent Jackson while Logan was assigned private practice attorney David M. Hopkins.

Since the shooting, Chesnut has filed a lawsuit against the private prison company from which Jackson escaped. The filing alleges Chesnut's injuries were a result of negligent security policies on the part of Nashville-based CCA.

The civil suit alleges that Jackson was given prior knowledge of when he would be transferred for a doctor's appointment, allowing Logan to plan an escape. Chesnut is asking for $14 million for himself and an additional $2.5 million in damages for his wife, according to the suit.

First of all Officer Chestnut, thank you for serving and protecting us. People just do not realize how our officers put their lives on the line for us. I admire all you police men and women. I could not handle the things you do and see.

There was no reason for Joesph Jackson to shoot Officer Chestnut. What he did was in cold blood. He could have shot him once and left but no he had to shoot him numerous times. I feel Joesph Jackson needs the death penality. He doesn't need to live and eat off our tax money. He wanted this policeman dead! I admire all the other policemen and women that got together and caught the two. All of you have such a wonderful bond. When one is down all of you feel it.

To Officer Chestnut: I am so glad you survived. You hang in there and do what you have to do. I feel you deserve the money you are asking for. You almost lost your life over negligence. God bless you and your family.

AWWWW! I'm so sorry for the guys who can't afford an attorney. Wish the state didn't have any more for them either, but they'll get one. Hope the attorney they get just passed the bar after 10 unsuccessful attempts.

And hopefully for the cruel act of shooting officer Chestnut, they'll get what they deserve - the death penalty.

I'm glad he lived to identify them. And I am proud of him and the police force. We need them in our city.

hmmmm... maybe if the 2 loonies had stayed in school, gone to college, and gotten a real job, they wouldn't have been in prison in the first place. Hey, I'm just sayin'.....

Yeah, but then girlie girl, the loonie that shot up fort hood was a major college graduate and it did n't help him to stay out of violent acts towards his fellow mankind.

Oh, I forget, the people he shot were his enemy.

How's it going gg?

Uhh, you don't get the death penalty just for shooting a cop. You only may get it for killing someone.
