A Metro police veteran should consider himself lucky after an allegedly drunken motorist grazed him Tuesday morning during a traffic stop on southbound Interstate 65.

Police say Jerald Mills, 40, of Nolensville Pike, passed so closely to Officer Michael Passaro, who was standing on the shoulder of the roadway, that the van’s side mirror hit the back of the officer’s arm. The officer was not hurt.

Passaro gave chase and on Sidco Drive at Kenilwood Drive stopped the vehicle that had struck him.

Mills was charged with driving under the influence, aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an accident, violation of the implied consent law and failure to obey Tennessee’s move over law, which requires motorists to move to another lane when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle.

Mills is being held in lieu of $65,000 bond.
