Another wake-up call for sluggish Volunteers

Was it me, or did anyone else feel like they were in a time warp Saturday, circa 1979? Seems Tennessee had a pretty good team that year, and a Knoxville newspaper columnist wrote a tongue-in-cheek article wondering exactly what a Rutger was. The Scarlet Knights were not amused, and neither was UT when it lost 13-7. Long-time fans must have thought about that as the Vols headed to the locker room fortunate to be down just 14-7 to a team rated 114th out of 117 Division I schools.

There will be those who excuse the game as simply a hangover from the loss to Florida or overlooking an inferior opponent. That excuse is already wearing thin, with the inexplicable disappearance of the offense for long stretches of every game this season. You can get away with that against Wyoming and Rutgers. I don
