Anti-death penalty activists will have an opportunity to learn more about the issues central to their cause at the 8th Annual Death Penalty Institute, which begins Friday at Fisk University.

Coordinated by Amnesty International USA Southern Regional Office, The Race Relations Institute, and the Tennessee Coalition to Abolish State Killing, the three-day event will include a series of workshops and panel discussions on the subject.

Some of the topics include a historical perspective of the death penalty, how to effectively get out the message, facts on capital punishment, the legal process, and alternatives to the death penalty.

The purpose of the Institute goes beyond learning how to organize demonstrations, said Naomi Tutu, program coordinator for the Race Relations Institute.
