Gov. Phil Bredesen today appointed Nashville attorney Joe P. Binkley Jr. to the Davidson County Circuit Court judge position — a spot that came open following Division V Judge Walter C. Kurtz’s retirement.

“I am at a point in my career where I want to return something to the judicial system that has provided me with tremendous and rewarding challenges and purpose for my life,” Binkley said in a statement released by the state Administrative Office of the Courts.

The attorney beat out two other applicants, including Metro Councilman Mike Jameson, who had told The City Paper he would only step down from his Metro Council post with the approval of his constituents.

Binkley, a Nashville native, has been in private practice for 38 years. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University Law School and has been a member of the Nashville Bar Association since 1970, according the state AOC.
