It was a different kind of bird call.
In muggy 80-degree weather Wednesday morning, the Metro Greenways Commission of the Metro Board of Parks and Recreation, in concert with Warner Park Nature Center, opened a small dam at Shelby Bottoms. The groups hope the change in habitat will create an ecosystem suitable for migratory shorebirds.
The dam sets adjacent to a 3-year-old wetland pond at the park. As the water spreads, the pond will be partially drained, creating mud flats habitable to such species as sandpipers, plovers, avocets and phalaropes.
