Bob Pope refutes Democratic Party press release labeling him a ‘pornographer’

Bob Pope, who was featured prominently in a GOP video on YouTube, denied claims Tuesday he is a 'pornographer.'

Gun show promoter Bob Pope, the focal point of a controversial Tennessee Republican Party video on the wife of Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, disputed a Democratic Party statement issued yesterday labeling him a "pornographer."

Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Gray Sasser issued a statement deriding his state party adversaries over the Obama flap.

“The Tennessee Republican Party should be ashamed of the way they have run amok in recent months, drawing unwanted attention to the state of Tennessee,” Sasser said in a written statement issued to Tennessee media. “Going so far as to use a former strip club owner to make their point, the TNGOP betrays their voter's confidence and further increases the likelihood that their deplorable attack against Sen. Barack Obama's wife will be one more national news item mischaracterizing the vast majority of Tennesseans.

“It appears that the Tennessee Republican Party would rather use a pornographer as their spokesperson than their top elected officials Senator Lamar Alexander and Senator Bob Corker,” Sasser added.

Pope’s financial interest in a Nashville strip club was documented in a 1994 story by the Chattanooga Times-Free Press and reported again by the newspaper Tuesday.

Pope, one of the Southeast's most high-profile gun show promoters, is a longtime Second Amendment activist and GOP campaign contributor. He is featured in the Tennessee GOP YouTube video that attacked Michelle Obama for statements she made about feeling “proud” about America for the first time in her adult life.

"For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm proud of my country," Michelle Obama stated in a February appearance that created controversy for the Obama campaign.

The video has drawn international attention to the Tennessee Republican Party, and both of the state’s Republican senators – Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander – have rebuked their own state party and asked them to discontinue use of the video.

Yet, the Sasser statement uses the word "pornographer" in a reference to Pope, admitted Democratic Party Spokesperson Wade Munday.

Pope, however, when reached by The City Paper, denied ever being involved in pornography.

“I’ve never dealt in any kind of pornography,” Pope said. “I owned that club for four years in the early 1990s. That is over and finished.”

Munday said the Democratic Party was not aware Pope had any interest in producing pornography, adding, "That may not have been the best choice of words."

"Not that I know of," Munday said when asked if Pope was involved in pornography. "It's just that the industries (pornography, strip clubs) seem to be linked."

Is Sasser just following in dad's footsteps? And, BTW CP. Beef up your editor staff or better school your reporters. In the line:"...one of the Southeast’s most high-profile gun show promoter’s..."promoter is plural NOT possessive. Lose the apostrophe.

Seems like it's OK for the Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman to flatout lie but not OK for the Republicans to show what Obama's wife said about herself.

Why would a strip club owner not be involved in pornography? Demeaning women (or men if Pope was in a male strip club)for a way to make money sounds like pornography to decent people.

The question should be, "Did Michele say it or not"?

Strip club is a form of porn

I've been to one.... no great loss either way. Went there with several Councilmen to see if what was rumored to be true was...well, actually taking place. It wasn't. And frankly, if men are that stupid as to have to PAY for woman to expose her vaginal area, then what can you say. They're just stupid. LOL Michele Obama did, in fact, state she had not been proud of her country until recently. I viewed the entire speech on several websites. Blame it on lack of sleep or maybe, just maybe, she really feels that way.

Who's never misspoken? Give the lady a break. My goodness, look at all of the malaprops from our current president.

"Focal point"?!?! Have you seen this video? Bob appears for a fraction of the overall video, yet is used as the 'straw man' in this argument. And since when are wives off limits? How many parodies of Barbara Bush did we see (think, men in drag).Read up on libel and you'll find it's a tough case to make when you're a public figure, which is exactly what they are.

Sorry but strip clubs are a form of porn. The republicans should ditch that guy.

EasyWriter- she said in twice in two different speeches!! Barrack needs to get his feelings off his sleeve. When a person speaks in public they are open for rebuke.

I rather have Pope speaking/representing me then either Corker or Alexander.

No, Girlieho, Michelle Obama said that this was the first time in her ADULT LIFE that she felt "really proud" of her country. Michelle Obama became an adult during the Reagan years. Who could feel proud of America while it was electing Reagan & the Bushes? Further, even if she wanted Bill Clinton to win in '92, then she saw what a dreadful disappointment he was, and how Americans put Newt Gingrich's Republicans in charge of Congress a mere two years later. Looking at the last 25 years, one can understand how Ms. Obama feels.Spouses aren't off limits: Cindy McCain won't release her tax returns. Bill Clinton has made racially charged statements (&, of course, sleeps around). Laura Bush killed a man, then pulled strings to stay out of jail. Barbara Bush is a nasty woman, who refers to other women as bitches. And Nancy Reagan was stupid, manipulative, committed adultery, and wanted to run the country through astrology.There. Michelle Obama is definitely a step up.

Guns and strip clubs are OK? Why is the TN GOP nothing but scum? With the like of Eric Crapton, gg's darling husband, Crisp, etc geared toward future leadership - I'd be switching parties today.

Spoken like a true liberal MJB. When you can't discuss a topic, just resort to name calling."Better to be thought of as a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt".

I know from personal experience that this fat **** is a total PIG. He would hit on me when I was eighteen and he was 100 and fat and nasty. He used to promote gun shows and would let the media sneak in and harass the vendors. Really this man is a poor excuse for a human being!
