A 9-year-old boy is lucky he wasn’t hurt worse Tuesday night when he walked into crossfire on his way to a neighborhood market in East Nashville.

The child, who was visiting his grandmother on Crockett Street, was walking to Lucky 7 Discount Grocery at 1303 Jones Ave. for a drink when gunfire erupted just after 5 p.m.

Thomas Waters, 18, said a man he claims robbed him two months ago was waiting outside the store in a black Nissan Altima with tinted windows. They argued and shots were exchanged between the two.

The 9-year-old, who was across the street, was hit by a bullet that grazed the child’s thigh. He was transported to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital where he was treated and released.

No one else was struck by the gunfire.

Metro police are asking for the public’s help to identify the alleged second gunman. The wanted man is described as a black man with braids.

Waters, of Dellway Villa Road, is charged with unlawful weapon possession. He claims he did not fire in the child’s direction.

Anyone with information about the shooting or unknown gunman is urged to contact Youth Services detectives at 862-7417 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
