Vanderbilt scored a pair of runs in the first inning and one in the sixth and received nearly perfect performances from pitchers Matt Buschmann and Stephen Shao in blanking Belmont 3-0 at Hawkins Field Tuesday night.

Vanderbilt jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Ryan Klosterman led off with a single and touched home when Warner Jones extended his school-record hitting streak to 31 games with a double to plate the first run. Jones later scored after a passed ball and single by Mike Baxter.

Vanderbilt added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Baxter reached on an error and later came home on a wild pitch.

Dennis Gomez picked up the loss for Belmont, allowing two runs in three innings. Charles Lee, Brandon Paetznick and Will Tucker combined to toss five scoreless innings while striking out five.

Vanderbilt (19-5, 3-3 SEC) returns to action today when it plays host to Austin Peay at 6 p.m.

Belmont (20-8, 6-3 A-Sun) will be back in action again Friday when they host conference rival Georgia State at 3 p.m. at Greer Stadium.

Trojans blitz Bryan

Trevecca (34-7, 6-1 TranSouth) flexed its muscles Tuesday in a decisive doubleheader sweep of Bryan College.

In the first game, Brad Cook was 4-for-4 with a homer as the Trojans cruised to a 14-3 victory.

Trevecca hurler Jonathan Burton improved to 7-0 on the season by allowing just a pair of runs in garnering his second complete game.

The Trojans completed the sweep by shelling Bryan 12-2.

Shaun Cozart began the scoring barrage with a three-run home run in the top of the second, his first of the year.

Bryce Gundry (3-1) tossed a complete game two-hitter surrendering only two runs and striking out five.

Trevecca, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, entertains conference foe Martin Methodist in a weekend series beginning Friday and culminating with a Saturday doubleheader.
