Consultants to discuss report on potential fairgrounds uses

Monday, November 5, 2012 at 4:48pm

Consultants who worked on phase one of the Fairgrounds Master Plan are set to report their preliminary findings on potential uses of the Tennessee State Fairgrounds property.

On Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
at the Sonny West Conference Center in the Howard Office Building on Second Avenue the consultants will present their phase one analysis at a public meeting.

Early last year, the Metropolitan Council directed Metro staff to develop a “Fairgrounds Master Plan” to analysis future uses for the fairgrounds. Phase one of that plan, the “Fair and Events Analysis,” focuses on potential fairgrounds and event uses for the property.

Phase two is to consider how new, mixed-use commercial and residential development might work on the fairgrounds property.

The Council will make the final decision on the fairgrounds site’s future.

Details of the process and community input so far are on the Metro Planning Department’s Fairgrounds Master Plan webpage.

Curious the timing, with everyone's attention distracted by a very devisive presidential election, Mayor Dean's cronies seem to believe the time is right to sneak issues past the citizens.

Politics as usual for our excuse for elected leadership.

I still support finding a reputable firm to develop the raceway site into a tourist attraction capitalizing on the racing history, both equine and automotive, with a museum, tours, rides around the track in (modified, of course) race cars, and exposition races for the devoted enthusiasts.

The Fairgrounds portion could be developed into a facility celebrating the old time fair midways many of us experienced growing up, combining the games and rides in a permanent, nearly year round setting. We should not forget the agricultural aspect which accompanied the anticipated yearly event, with livestock shows and other demonstrations reminding younger visitors of the rural history of much of Tennessee.

Naturally, a museum highlighting the history of travelling carnivals and the importance of the county fair in our history would be located on the site.

Consideriing the proximity of the site to Mayor Deans Pharonic monument, the MCC, Fort Negly, and the Sounds stadium, a Nashville history tour, encompassing other surrounding sites of historical significance could be organized for visitors to relieve them of even more dollars.

This is a unique opportunity to preserve a site such as this, create jobs, and generate revenue, which Mayor Dean and the sock puppet Metro Council seem to publicly desire.

"the time is right to sneak issues past the citizens."

Kinda like how the Gov has budget hearing today of all days.

What about horse drawn carriage rides as a tourist attraction?

The Fairgrounds should keep the flea market, a huge draw and money maker.

How much is King Karl paying (with taxpayer's money) to run this faux finding mission? How many hours (behind closed doors) are we (taxpayers) paying for? Would love to know the number of "secret" meetings this has involved.

they're paying $135,000 for this "study" ... not like the fairgrounds has not been studied before.... but it's definitely a scam.... and everybody remember, under the Metro Charter, Metro Council has NO authority over the fairgrounds! The Fair Board has "complete charge and control" over the property to administer "on behalf of the county."

Don't let them steamroll the people! We know how their "study" will turn out... let's keep the fairgrounds as a fairgrounds!
