U.S. Sen. Bob Corker called a federal gas tax holiday proposed by Republican colleague and presidential candidate John McCain “pandering extraordinaire” today.
“I think all of us realize this is solely pandering,” Corker said of suspending the gas tax over the summer.
Both Sens. McCain (R-Ariz.), the GOP’s presumptive nominee, and Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) are both backing a suspension of the federal gas tax to ease Americans’ burden at the pump.
Clinton’s rival for the Democratic nomination, front-running Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), is against the proposal.
Corker (R-Tenn.) essentially sided with Obama today in remarks to reporters after speaking to the Nashville Rotary.
Corker pointed out that both Clinton and McCain are in favor of so-called “cap and trade” legislation coming up for debate next month in the Senate — legislation that Corker says, “actually is a tax on gasoline.”
“So again, if that’s not pandering, I don’t know what it is,” Corker told reporters. “It’s very disappointing to see. I think as a country we need to have a real energy policy that ensures that Americans are going to be able to have access to petroleum at fair prices over time and that we’re not transferring this huge amount of wealth overseas that we’re doing every day.”
When asked if he was disappointed in McCain’s proposing of the idea, Corker said: “I watch what happens during election years, and nothing surprises me.”
Anyone peered over "Hundred Dollar Bill's" 8-foot fence to get his opinion?
Corker criticized Dubya's fantasy tax stimulus rebate, and has opposed a few other fool ideas. Nice to see a Republican going against the GOP establishment when warranted.
I agree that it is a stupid idea. You must be gullible to think that dropping the 18 cent per gallon tax would result in 18 cent cheaper gas. You can be assured that restoring the 18 cent tax would be met with a greater than 18 cent increase in the price of gas. Both McCain and Hillary are trying to spend billions of taxpayer money to buy their way into the White House.
Bob Corker keeps suprising me with his candid observations. It's really refreshing to see, especially, like Vandy1975 said on the GOP side.
Odumbo says a person would only save about $.30 a day if the gas tax were suspended during the summer now Croker is with him. How about getting a bit more in touch with the people and reality and thinking in terms of at $.18 per gallon that's $3.60 per fill up. I get thirty miles per gallon and fill up every three days so that's $7.20 a week. Could I use that 7.20 each week for something else you better believe it. It would help cover some of the exaggerated price I'm paying for food.
OMG! I just saw myself in the mirror and I am absolutely beautiful.
drill ANWR!!!! Drill it NOW.
If the gas price at the pump fell 18 cents per gallom, would that make you happy or sad? I would welcome a 18 cent drop in price but to Corker that would be tip money.
Get real people, it would drop 18 cents for about a week, maybe two. By Memorial Day that 18 cents and more will be gone.
Do you see what the oil companies are doing? They are getting the American people de-sensitized to the idea of $3-$4/gallon gas. Part of that plan is to push the "gas tax holiday" idea through their fellow corporate whores - McCain and Clinton - so that we all fall all over ourselves just to get a few petroleum crumbs from them. How about this for a plan. Tell Big Oil that due to national security concerns that they have two options. One... the oil industry will be levied with a windfall profits tax that will be earmarked for green energy and mass transit programs in the states. Or option two... the federal government will nationalize the oil industry and relegate the existing oil companies to distribution only. They will be allowed to move oil and to sell it at stations, but not to actually produce it. Oil exploration (the industry's ongoing excuse for why the prices are so high at the pump) will be left to a nonprofit group of scientists and industry experts who work for the government. All you have to do is threaten Big Oil with these options and you just WATCH the gas prices drop back down to where they were before BushCo stole the White House. Gas crisis solved.
In case you haven't noticed, the dramatic increases in gas prices have taken place since the DEMOCRATS took control of congress. The left in this country has had a stranglehold on policy when it comes to drilling for oil and refining......drill everywhere we can on our own soil and build refineries and we will lessen our dependence on foreign oil. Ethenol is a cruel joke.....taking food grains for fuel takes food off the plate of the world and makes what remains much more expensive. Give us nuclear power, coal and coal liquification and DRILL, DRILL, DRILL.
