U.S. Sen. Bob Corker went to the Senate floor today to criticize a $146 billion economic stimulus package, saying it is nothing but a “political stimulus” that will add to the nation’s deficit.
“It’s a stimulus to make the American people think that we, as a body, are doing something to actually cause the economy to be stronger,” Corker (R-Tenn.) said.
The House passed the stimulus package Tuesday overwhelmingly. The package passed by the House would give tax rebates of up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for married couples, plus $300 per child.
U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Nashville) was one of the 35 who opposed the measure, echoing some of the same concerns Corker voiced about not paying for the package and having to borrow more money from nations like China.
In his remarks, Corker said he was in favor of Americans getting money back from the federal government but that generations to come would be paying for the nearly $150 billion package.
“I must say that I find it so odd that today in America we would consider a stimulus package, a package that in essence is built on sprinkling money around America … and then encouraging people to quickly spend that money to create an economic stimulus in this country,” Corker said in his remarks.
Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), the chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, differs with Corker and is in favor of the stimulus package.
“The president acknowledged that as strong as our economy is, 52 quarters of growing jobs, it's taken a downward turn. We need to take appropriate action to help it continue to produce more jobs,” Alexander said in a statement. “This economic growth plan is a good example of bipartisan leaders working together, and as one senator, my recommendation is that we support what the president and the House of Representatives have done.”
“It’s a stimulus to make the American people think that we, as a body, are doing something to actually cause the economy to be stronger,” Corker (R-Tenn.) said.No it isn't. It's a bribe. And you know what? I'll take it. $600 in my pocket is more important to me than adding a percent to an already 9 trillion dollar debt.
I can't believe it. Corker is right about something!
I guess pigs are flying, Bucky!
We have a worse problem now they're trying to give Illegals refunds http://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/0108/Lou_Dobbs_alert_Illegal_immigrants_may_get_rebates.html
Wow, a politician that actually thinks for himself and is not a party parrot, very strange indeed. We need more of this logic in DC.
I know fuel price is market driven. If they want to put money back in my pocket cut interest rates & build refinery's so the price of diesel fuel will come down. Then I'll go back to work (until we strike or get locked out again).so sad
I wonder who told Corker to say what he did? Surely he didn't come up with that all by himself.
He got it off the Internet, fundit, kind of like all the drivel you post on a daily basis. You sure as hell don't think that crap up yourself, or at least I hope you don't. There would be serious concerns about your mental health.
I'm guessing JDG did not vote for Harold Ford, Jr.My drivel is 100% original, thanks very much and I guess I should wonder about my mental state for even logging on to this site with folks like yourself.Good day!
You would be correct, I did not. I have higher standards.
Good for Corker and Cooper. As for the old RINO if no one runs against him I will vote for the dem even if it is a Ford. I am tired of his crap.
I applaud Sen. Corker and Rep. Cooper for opposing this legislation. It is unfortunate my Congressman, Mr. Wamp and my Senator Mr. Alexander chose to support this bill. I believe this Bill merely does more of the same-add debt onto the backs of our future generations. I am especially concerned with Mr. Alexander’s comment in referring to the economy -“we need to take appropriate action to help it continue to produce more jobs.” It is obvious Mr. Alexander believes the best thing to do to help businesses create jobs is to borrow more money. This is the Keynesian economic theory which believes one can spend their way into prosperity. It is a wrong philosophy because it attempts to skirt reality.Mark Albertini
