Crafton turns in English Only petitions

Councilman Eric Crafton officially made his second stab at a petition-driven charter amendment Tuesday when he turned in more than 5,000 signatures from Davidson County voters who want a special election for English Only.

Crafton repeated his claim that the cost of the $350,000 special election, which could be held Jan. 22, falls to Mayor Karl Dean and the judicial system, which thwarted his efforts the first time around.

“It took about two days to get back the required number [of 2,475 signatures],” Crafton said, calling the petition drive a “victory for ‘We the People.’”

Crafton said he encouraged the Davidson County Election Commission to still put the proposed charter amendment on the Nov. 4 ballot to save the taxpayers the expensive bill of a special election.

If there is a special election to determine if English should be the official language of Metro government and stating individuals have no right to service in any other language, then Crafton said he is not to blame.

Asked whether he blamed Mayor Dean, Crafton stated, “You’ll have to decide who was responsible for making calls to the Election Commission and getting Metro Legal to file the suit,” Crafton said.

Metro Director of Law Sue Cain said the first petition drive fell short of the required two-year waiting period by three days and couldn’t go on the ballot. The election commission took Cain’s advice and kept it off the ballot. A Davidson County Chancery Court judge sided with the election commission as well, forcing Crafton to try again.

Its time for Cain and the Mayor to do what is right for us and have the vote in Nov rather then spending 300K that don't have to be spent but for their obstruction and hard headedness.

By: WickedTribe on 12/31/69 at 7:00

100% agreed, idgaf.

By: pandabear on 12/31/69 at 7:00

100%, big time, and then some.Sue Cain is a liar. The time frame is from Nov 4 to Nov 4...not Nov 7 to Nov 4.It's time for accountability.Get out of our way and let us vote !

By: howelln on 12/31/69 at 7:00

The ballot has already been printer. It is too late to get it on the ballot. And why do this anyway? There is already a state law making English the primary language of government. Don't balme this on Sue Cain; it is all Crafton wasting our money.

By: Time for Truth on 12/31/69 at 7:00

How do you say "Send the fool home" in Spanish?

By: bfra on 12/31/69 at 7:00

So far, 2 posters here that really enjoy this being a sanctuary city and want to encourage all the illegals to continue to flock here. You 2 should move south of our border where you can hear more Spanish all the time, even in their not too friendly jails! They do not promote English, nor welcome it.

By: WickedTribe on 12/31/69 at 7:00

"There is already a state law making English the primary language of government."It's not the same law. That law just says business must be done in at least English, meaning it can simultaneously be done in 19 other languages if they wanted (translations of which waste tax payers' money). This measure proposed by Crafton says "only" English, where if someone needs a translation the cost is on them instead of on taxpayers.

By: Funditto on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Mr. Crafton looks a little like a pig...

By: girliegirl on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Sue Cain and the Liberal Left are costing us more money than anything Wall Street is doing. So sad.

By: nosebleed on 12/31/69 at 7:00

The opponents of this would have appeared more reasonable, if they had just let this English vote happen. Everyone knows what the results will be.I fear that the Libs. will go into the fetal position, after McCain wins the election.

By: EASTWATCHER on 12/31/69 at 7:00

The really stupid thing here is , we are paying a half million dollars for an election that has no real reason . It does nothing for our safty , quality of life , community programs , and the list could go on. This is to prove a point Crapton should pay for the election out of his pocket , the law is the law and the judges let you know that !!!Why pay for an election that serves no real reason, this matter could be brought up at any time later in the year, but no........Crafton wants taxpayers to pay for it and in a year that Metro is already almost in the hole. Way to go you right wing nutts..............................

By: shaneaproductions on 12/31/69 at 7:00

This is such a waste of our tax money. I'm not anti-English...I'm anti-moronic legislation. It's a "solution" for something that isn't a problem. Crafton should be focus on community building enterprises.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/31/69 at 7:00

well said, shane.

By: nosebleed on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Eastwatcher, Of course, you are right. This shouldn't have happened this way. But... Dean knew, or should have known, Crafton would do this.Maybe Dean should pay for it out of his pocket. They should have let this happen, on the Nov. ballot, and been done with it.It would have been forgotten about in a week, and Dean could say he didn't try to prevent the public, from having a vote. The guy is dumber than a well rope, and I like him.

By: WickedTribe on 12/31/69 at 7:00

"I fear that the Libs. will go into the fetal position, after McCain wins the election."Hahaha, keep dreaming. And this isn't a liberal issue just because some crybabies want to scream racist at people who believe we shouldn't change our language for foreigners who refuse to properly integrate themselves.I'm about as ultra-left latte liberal as you can get.

By: WickedTribe on 12/31/69 at 7:00

EASTWATCHER,Get a clue. This special election is NOT Crafton's fault. He was forced to do this by Sue Cain, the mayor, the council, and the courts twisting the law to deny our vote on the issue. You're right it's a huge waste of our money, but blame the correct persons.

By: nosebleed on 12/31/69 at 7:00

tribe it seems to be the libs. that are crying about it. ''People will think we are mean''..sniff..sniff. ''Please like us illegal aliens.'' ''Were they mean to you at that awful jail?'' Anyway, I understand that the purpose of the bill is to spare Metro from spending additional funds, to print multi-language legal forms.

By: EASTWATCHER on 12/31/69 at 7:00

WickedTribe,Help me here, why is it so urgent this is done now? Do we not have other elections that are scheduled and it could be included at that time? What difference will it make one way or the other ,it's still going to be a stupid a-- law either way it goes.....Most we encounter the cost for something that really has no importance?

By: WickedTribe on 12/31/69 at 7:00

I don't know, EASTWATCHER. Why don't you ask Dean, Cain, and the people who stopped it from being on the November 4th ballot, what difference it will make one way or the other?

By: Time for Truth on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Funditto, maybe it's time for a "Send the Fool Home" bumper sticker....Can you make them any larger?

By: Time for Truth on 12/31/69 at 7:00

girlie, that's the silliest post I've seen on this topic since somebody (probably barfrag or IQ76) accused Funditto of being an illegal (ie 'wit' a name lahk funditto yew must be one a them illegals'). And there are plenty of silly ones today. All these people saying 'English Only' who can't speak or spell English. Crafton sounds like Goober Pyle on the radio.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

What a waste of time and money.

By: Time for Truth on 12/31/69 at 7:00

nose, the purpose of this bill WAS to bring more far-right wingnuts to the polls. With it not on the November ballot the only remaining things this bill can accomplish are allowing Crafton to stroke his ego, wasting taxpayer money and (if it passes) identifying Nashville as a bastion of narrow-minded hillbillies.

By: WickedTribe on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Yeah, bringing more far-right wingnuts to the polls in a state that's not even remotely considered a swing state (despite that whole Clinton thing back in the day), is about as realistic as claiming the purpose of this bill was to make all the Mexicans go back home.

By: nosebleed on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Truth, no doubt it will bring more people to the polls, but its going to be a large turn out anyway for the POTUS vote.My biggie for supporting this bill, as I said, is to eliminate spending more money for special legal forms, for non English speaking people. I bear no ill will toward those people, I just think they need to handle their own business, and get their own translators, if needed. It will not effect emergency services. I think these people are smarter than most think. And a lot of them are gaming the system, at taxpayers expense.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Providing their own interpreter will not stop illegals from coming here and it will not prevent them from "gaming the system". Like I said, this is an incredible waste of time and money.

By: nosebleed on 12/31/69 at 7:00

gdiafante, no it won't stop illegals from coming here, but cutting out some of their ''room service'' might slow it down.

By: ACitizen on 12/31/69 at 7:00

This has nothing to do with English Only. This was and remains a wedge issue to bring out the right wingnuts for the Nov election in the hopes that they'll push the button for McInsane while they're in the voting booth. It's just like putting a local Defense of Marriage initive on a national election ballot: it gets the right wingnuts all fired up over an issue that wouldn't make a hill of beans' difference to 99% of the population. You gasbags need to get a life and quit arguing over Crapton's media grab that is financed by some group out of Virginia.

By: bfra on 12/31/69 at 7:00

TnT - The narrow minded hillbillies have their pea brain posts here today, opposing what could be a start to taking our City back and giving the message, we don't want or welcome illegals. Do you not know what illegal means or do you just favor criminals? Let the illegals know, if they are intent on staying here, they will be paying for some of their services, that are free now! Of course, it will not alter enough free services, but some is a start.

Unless I commit to and pay for a shop, my offerings are limited. This is just a fun joke for me, so I can do that. But how's this:http://www.cafepress.com/crafton.309888980

By: Anna3 on 12/31/69 at 7:00

You liberals are always so controlling! You want to keep us from voting and then blame it on Crafton? What Kool Aid have you been drinkin'? Liberals are the control freaks in society...they want to control our money, our kids, our property, our schools, our speech, our guns, our thinking, and now our ability to vote. How sad...if they would only get a life, they might stay out of mine.

By: Anna3 on 12/31/69 at 7:00

PS - Crafton offered to sign a consent agreement with the city forfeiting his ability to sue the city if they would move this vote to the November ballot so the taxpayers would not have to spend any extra money and Mayor Dean refused...then Crafton offered to pay for the reprint of the ballots AND he offered to FED EX the newly printed balots to the troops since their ballots have already been mailed...and Mayor Dean refused again. So...Howelin, Time for Truth, and Funditto (The usual nitwit poster children) you still want to blame Crafton? If so, I guess there is proof that there are people with a larger shoe size than IQ.
