Cyclist Lance Armstrong shines as American hero

In the well-known words of that homespun philosopher, Will Rogers, "We can't all be heroes because someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by."

And the world was clapping this week, when it became clear that American Lance Armstrong was about to take his third-in-a-row Tour de France cycling title.

At a time when heroes seem to be ever more rare and heroic deeds seem so much smaller, Armstrong stands tall, over and over again, and reminds us that the human spirit is a wondrous thing
