U.S. Rep. Lincoln Davis condemned Tuesday comments from a state Democratic Party executive committee member alleging that Sen. Barack Obama was “terrorist connected.”
Last week, Fred Hobbs, a state Democratic Party executive committee member, ignited a firestorm for alleging that the Democrats’ presumptive presidential nominee was “terrorist connected.”
The comments, which were first reported in The City Paper, were made in a story relating to Davis (D-Pall Mall), his Fourth Congressional District and his lack of an endorsement of Obama.
Tuesday, Davis, who had remained silent on Hobbs’ comments, condemned them.
“Mr. Hobbs is neither a constituent, close friend nor political ally of mine,” Davis said in a statement issued from his congressional office. “His statements were wrong, outrageous and unacceptable.”
On the executive committee, Hobbs represents Senate District 13, which extends into part of Davis’ district. Hobbs lives in Rutherford County.
Since making the allegation that Obama was “terrorist connected,” Hobbs has apologized to fellow executive committee members.
Hobbs wrote that his comments about Obama were “wrong and offensive.”
“I apologize if my remarks in any way hurt any of our great Democratic candidates, including Sen. Obama,” Hobbs wrote of the presumptive party nominee. “Also, I apologize if my comments embarrassed our state or my friends at the Tennessee Democratic Party.”
“I was not as well prepared as I should have been when speaking with reporters, and I should have taken more time to research Sen. Obama’s positions. My comments did reflect questions I had after what I had seen reported on Fox News, but I should have taken some time to check the accuracy of what I saw on television before speaking publicly. My statement that Sen. Obama ‘may be terrorist-connected’ was incorrect, and I apologize for making it.”
Sean Braisted, a local Nashville political blogger, first reported Hobbs’ letter late Monday.
Davis’ district went overwhelmingly to Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) in February’s Tennessee primary.
In last week’s story, Davis’ chief of staff, Beecher Frasier, did not refute Hobbs’ statement, saying he didn’t know for sure if Obama was terrorist connected but assumed he was not.
Frasier later issued a clarifying statement saying “no one in their right mind including (him)” believed Obama was associated with terrorists.
After Hobbs’ made the “terrorist connected” allegations, the Tennessee Democratic Party said its executive committee member was “obviously misinformed.”
Inez Crutchfield, a superdelegate who has endorsed Obama and a member of the Democratic Party’s executive committee from Davidson County, said she was “angry” and “disappointed” after reading Hobbs’ comments but had no plans at this point to call for his ouster.
“I hold him responsible for what he said,” Crutchfield said. “And I think that one of the things that you expect of an intelligent, rational person is that they, at his age, should have the experience as well as the ability and thoughtfulness to temper your words so that you will not have to eat them later.”
Another executive committee member from Nashville, Doris Medlin, said she didn’t have plans to call for Hobbs’ removal and didn’t want to be “distracted” from focusing on electing Democrats this fall.
“I will have to leave this matter to him,” Medlin said of Hobbs.
The Democrats’ executive committee is next meeting in August, and the members can make motions regarding the status of members, said party spokesman Wade Munday.
From how Crutchfield understands party rules, it would take a two-thirds vote to remove Hobbs.
In addition, former Congressman Harold Ford Jr., whose Senate campaign Frasier managed in 2006, issued a statement distancing himself from Frasier, saying Davis’ chief of staff was “dead wrong” and that Obama was a “a Christian, American patriot with a vision to make America safer and stronger.”
See, this is a clear example of the "Change" we need in America. This country is so separated, which is why we are where we are as a nation. I'm embarrassed and ashamed for him. I can only hope that a lesson was learned that facts need to be presented when making these types of allegations.
He should resign. We have enough stupid politicians.
I don’t know gd, if that were the prerequisite for resigning, we might not have very many politicians left! Hmmmm!
And that's a bad thing?? lol
Is NCP going to apologize for printing this Fox News-like dribble?
What do they need to apologize for? They didn’t make Hobbs say it, they didn’t make it up. They just reported what he said, both times. In fact, from what I understand, the NCP story is what brought this to light. What is the issue?
John Tanner is the only Tennessee Democratic congressman who have supported Hillary Clinton. Tennessee Democrats are liberal enough.
He was not incorrect Ayers and Dorn were terrorists , self confessed and found guilty and served time now they are indoctronating our youth as is Joann Chesmire who was with the SLA involved in the Patty Hirst kidnapping.
Good Lord. This man believes what he hears on Fox News. Give me a break. This man should be run out of office. Believing republican lies about Senator Obama and repeating them is as pathetic as you can get and lower than a snake. Obama is a much better man than any republican who is in government now.
idgaf Sounds like you are repeating the same crap. Obama was 8 years old when Ayers was taking actions against the Viet Nam war. Knowing people now does not make Obama responsible for their pasts or present. Republicans are busy with the smears and lies. They can't win a fair election. Real christian republicans we have.
The 3 news services NBC, CBS, ABC are as liberal and pro democrat about issues, that I believe what Fox says just as much. Look at Barrack Hussein ObamaS record for his life not the retoric spewing from his ultra-liberal mouth.
As Lincoln Davis wants to become State Governor, he will support Obama after all. Also Bart Gordon may support Obama. Because Gordon doesn't face any Republican Party challenger this year.
Davis is a bigger fool than he let's on. If Hamas isn't a terrorist group what is.If a terrorist group and terrorist countries endorse him then there is a connection.
Fred hobbs comments remind me of what my grandmother said of a cousin "He was born an idiot and he's lost some ground since". Of, and Fred, Obama isn't a muslim either
"Davis is a bigger fool than he let's on.If Hamas isn't a terrorist group what is.If a terrorist group and terrorist countries endorse him then there is a connection."You know those terrorists groups aren't drooling idiots. They know what reaction an endorsement from them would engender in simple people like yourself. Therefore they're going to endorse the candidate that they do not want to win. They've endorsed the candidate who is going to be the greater danger to their goals and objectives.
"If a terrorist group and terrorist countries endorse him then there is a connection."Really? I have endorsed Obama, can you please show me the connection? Thanks.
I guess that makes you a terrorist gd!!
Wow!!! All to often living in the Greater Washington, DC area and being from Nashville, I find myself defending the mentality of southerners. Just when I seemingly convince my colleagues and friends that not all southerners are ignorant, backward thinking rednecks..., this idiot comes along. I know many southerners could give a rats rear end what other people around the country think of them. However, when people who should know better make such outlandish statements as Obama having terrorists connections, it's pretty hard to defend southerners as a whole. When word got out in this area about what Hobbs had stated people all over were just shaking their heads and laughing at his ignorance. Of course that laughter was followed by the usual negative comments about southern people..., white people in particular from the south. One person asked me just how long will white people in the south be so easily influenced by total ignorance? Another asked, just how long will white people in the south be so afraid of Black people? And, another asked... why don't they all just put on white pointed hoods and look like the ignorant racist dunces that they really are? These are all comments by white people living in Northern Virginia/DC/and Maryland. Blacks in the area pretty much just shook their heads and said so..., the new south is still pretty much the old south with a makeover to look new. In other words the more things change... the more they stay the same.
Hey PillowTalk4...The next time your friends ask you about southern white people, tell them I said kiss my arse.
Stop being so narrowminded Pillow, and get out more. My next door neighbor is from Boston, and a product of an Ivy League college. He always speaks about "those people" and "the blacks" etc.. Interestingly, he mentions them in a pitying way and never fails to mention how we (presumably Caucasians) need to help them because (according to him) they're incapable of helping themselves. Now is that not implied racism? Or does couching his bigoted views in "good intentions" make it less so? I also attended business school in Philly, and I've found the Italian "rednecks" of south Philadelphia to be the most racist of all people in this country. Soooooo... apologize if you will for Southerners (you don't have to for me), but it seems to me that your compulsion to apologize for Southerners says more about you than it does about Southerners or the people you're trying to impress. BTW: Mr. Hobbs, and for that matter Mr. Davis, are not saying anything that they don't believe. He's a typical Dim for blaming what he said on Fox News (laughable), and insulting his party's constituents for expecting them to believe him. Typical... typical.
Hobb's is just another gasbag in a society of gasbags. Why is it that we have to demonize the opponent of our candidate? The answer is that we, human beings, and Americans in particular, feel the need to be right, and if they can convince themselves that their choice in a candidate is right and the other person in evil. My father once told me that if someone spends time tearing down a candidate for office it is a clear statement that he doesn't really have much to offer. I think this goes for supporters also.
