An education adviser in Mayor Karl Dean’s office is headed to work for the state Department of Education next year.

Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman said in a release Wednesday Danielle Mezera will begin work as the assistant commissioner of career and technical education.

Kathleen Airhart, current director of schools for Putnam County, was also named as the department of education’s new deputy commissioner.

“Dr. Mezera has spent the past years bringing together the business, education and political communities in Nashville, and will bring great leadership to the department of education,” Huffman said.

Before serving as an education adviser for Dean, Mezera served as coordinator for Children and Youth Services for Metro.

Airhart, who has served as director of schools in Putnam County since 2007, recently was named the 2012 Tennessee Superintendent of the Year.

Both appointments will be effective Jan. 1, 2012.
