Sharkey, William Lawrence

ANTIOCH - The Rev. William Lawrence Sharkey, 81, died

May 31, 2003, at his residence. He was born July 27, 1921, the son of the late Samuel M. and Ernestine Lawrence Robbins Sharkey. Father Sharkey was a veteran of World War II of the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the George School in Newtown, Pa., and the St. Lukes School of Theology at the University of the South. He was ordained as a priest in 1960. He served as rector of Christ Church Tracy City, Tracy City, Tenn.; Church of the Epiphany, Jacksonville, Fla.; St. Matthias Church, Nashville; St. Paul's Church, Sikeston, Mo.; St. Paul's Church, Memphis; Christ Church, Cedar Key, Fla.; and St. Andrews Church in New Johnsonville, Tenn. He served as interim rector of St. Matthias of Nashville and Church of the Resurrection, Franklin, Tenn. He also served as the head of the department youth for the diocese of Tennessee and as Chaplin for the Retired Clergy and Spouses of the Diocese of Tennessee. He was also a trustee of the University of the South and Chaplain of the Order of St. Luke the Physician. Survivors include his wife, Constance G. Sharkey; son, William M. "Chip" (Joann) of Surry, Va.; daughters, Lucette Richards of Tracy City, Tenn., and Hilary Sharkey of Nashville; brother, Samuel Miller Sharkey Jr.; three grandchildren; five great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. Interment will be 11 a.m. today in City Cemetery in Tracy City. Memorial contributions may be made to the C. Griffith Sharkey Foundation, University of the South, School of Theology.
