FRANKLIN — Although criticized by analysts and conservative pundits, Fred Thompson denied Thursday that his presidential campaign had made mistakes and said his launch had been nothing but “good news.”
“We got real good reception from the people when we had our stops,” Thompson told Tennessee reporters Thursday, specifically when asked about incidents in Florida that have brought criticism upon the former senator. “People were standing out there in the sun there in central Florida, several hundred at a time, waiting and seemed like they knew me. Seemed like they were waiting for me. We just got excellent reception.”
In Florida, Thompson received negative press for incidents such as not remembering the circumstances surrounding the Terri Schiavo controversy and not knowing there was oil in the Everglades.
In South Carolina, Thompson said he didn’t regularly attend church, except when he visited his mother in Williamson County. Both South Carolina and Florida will play pivotal roles in how successful Thompson is in the Republican primary.
Also, conservative columnist George Will called Thompson’s entry into the presidential pool more “belly flop than swan dive.”
Despite the incidents and comments, Thompson was upbeat, saying that the discussion within his camp is that his presidential campaign launch “could have hardly gone any better.”
“Of course, in a crowd of 1,500, if you’re making a speech and somebody yawns, the story is usually the yawn,” Thompson said. “And I accept that and that’s just the way it goes.”
Rich Galen, an advisor to Thompson and one-time aide to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, said there is a disconnect between what the Washington pundits are saying about Thompson and the positive reaction he is seeing on campaign stops.
“They trust him,” Galen said of voters who have come to see Thompson.
In between fund-raising events, Thompson spoke to local reporters for about 25 minutes Thursday. He started the day raising money in Clarksville, then onto Murfreesboro, and Thursday evening he had an event at a private residence in Williamson County.
Today, Thompson will raise money in Jackson, then to Memphis and then onto Mississippi.
Thompson, like most other presidential candidates, is on a fund-raising push before the culmination of the third quarter, which ends Sept. 30.
The actor and former senator wouldn’t say how much money he thinks he’d raise.
“I don’t think it’s all about money,” Thompson said. “I don’t need to raise as much as some do. This day in time, you have a chance to get your message out like never before, and I think we’ll raise as much as we need to.”
Although Thompson started raising money in June and has been raising money throughout the third quarter, Thompson says his fund-raising totals should only be judged in comparison to the other candidates for the three-week period he has been officially running.
“Until you’re a candidate, you are not really hitting on many cylinders,” Thompson said.
Stuart Rothenberg, editor of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report, has said Thompson’s fund-raising totals for this quarter should be judged against competing candidates first quarters raising money, not just a three- to four-week period.
While Thompson has hit the Volunteer State fund-raising circuit heavily, he doesn’t currently reside in Tennessee. Thompson, who lives in McLean, Va., said he wants to move back to Tennessee though.
When, the Lawrenceburg, Tenn., native was asked?
“When I finish my service as president,” Thompson said.
Issue-wise, Thompson was asked about topics including his backing of the Iraq War, his support for the extension of the moratorium on Internet taxes, and his opposition to the bill Congress passed to extend the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.
On Iraq, Thompson said the “underlying point” is that “radical Islam” is trying to “bring down Western civilization, especially the United States of America.”
“And they’ll do anything to do that,” Thompson said. “Iraq and Afghanistan are the current fronts in their effort. That’s where we’ve drawn the line, but we’ll have a front anywhere we choose to draw the line.”
Thompson said the country must not “deliver the wrong message to the world” and not be “weak” or “divided” or “unable to do and have the determination to do things necessary to prevail.”
Where would find Mr. Thompson's military record? It seems logical that if a person doesn't thin enought of his country to serve in uniform then he certainly would have not right to hold high political office.Theodore E. HittLt. Col., USAF Ret.
Gee, that's a great idea. Every politician who never wore the uniform should be shot. I love it! Sure, we'd get some good guys in the process but man, how easy would that make it to get rid of the Democrats!?
No don't shoot THEM, shoot ME if I have to see one more front page with Fred Thompson on it this week CP and TNN! Well at least its Friday!
Well, Idahoser. Kerry was in the military, which is more than we can say about GW....
Thompson may be playing catch up from a fundraising and organization standpoint, but as far as voters are concerned there is plenty of room for - and interest in - adding a real candidate that conservatives can get behind to the Republican line up. We'll know soon enough whether Thompson can keep them tuned in.Given all the Bozos' lined up to run for president, Fred is the only hope we have.
If elected, do you think Thompson will strive to improve the water quality in the U.S.?
"Did you know this? Interesting story, Senator Thompson married his first wife when he was 17, and, ironically, married his second wife when she was 17." --Jay Leno
"Given all the Bozos' lined up to run for president, Fred is the only hope we have."That gives me a great deal of comfort!
MsTyphani, do the Clintons give you comfort?
gdiafante, that is a very good question and we should ask Fred. Given the state of the US at present, I believe that he would defer the water to local governments. There are many issues that would be considered, at least, as important. Border Security, Foreign Affairs, and The Iraq debacle just to name a few. Fred's focus seems to be straightforward, Security, Unity, Prosperity.
No candidate, including Thompson, gives me comfort. In fact, the political system in this country is so corrupt, it amazes me how many people continue to believe that politicians really care about average citizens. They don't, they serve special interests, not the populus. Cynical? Very, but substantiated by years of disappointment.
Yes, I slept quite well at night when Bill reigned and what gives me comfort about Freddie is that he says things like: "We got real good reception from the people when we had our stops,” “People were standing out there in the sun there in central Florida, several hundred at a time, waiting and seemed like they knew me. Seemed like they were waiting for me. We just got excellent reception.”This IMO is just not the dialogue of a well-learned person and most certainly not one of someone who I would hope to be President (IMO a President should be smarter than you and I). So thusly, it gives me comfort that someone would think Fred is the only hope for conservatives!
What do you think of our current President, MsTyphani?
MsTyphani, I agree but note that I did say given the "current field of candidates
I loathe him and I try not to think of him much.
But y Fred TNconservative? >>>what do you think about Ron Paul?
I love everything Ron Paul says except his stance on Iraq. I believe he would pull us out to abruptly which would make the middle east region completely unstable. He does say the right things otherwise. I will say that if he were the nominee, I could get behind him. Would you be able to get behind Fred if he were nominated?
I agree MsTyphani.
Fred’s running a different kind of campaign. Part of that is hearing from you. Fred wants questions from Americans. Fred knows there are pressing issues facing our nation and wants to hear your concerns.gdiafante, if you would like to ask Fred the question about the water quality, go to:http://fredfile.fred08.com/2007/ask-fred/
so probably not TNConservative.
although i don't consider myselft a starch democrat, i am a liberal!
"Fred Thompson, who is a former star of Law & Order, confirmed with his supporters that he is running for president. Afterwards, Thompson promised to solve the crisis in Iraq by the end of the episode." --Conan O'Brien
MsTyphani, I am sorry to hear that. I will pray for you.
That's a pretty elitist attitude TNcons.
Blanketnazi2 GW served in the Teaxas Air National Guard, and even though YOU would not like the accept that as military service. It is.
Oh believe me, I am more blessed than you could ever imagine so I think I'll be just fine without your sarcastically offered prayers TNConservative!

I find it amusing how Liberals will attack any time a civil exchange of ideas is attempted.
You consider that an attack? That IS amusing.
I'll pray for you.
MsTyphani, so good to see that you have reemerged. More so, since you hold yourself out as a spokesperson for your Black community. I, and probably several others, would like to know what you and your Black community are doing to condemn the six Ghetto thugs that savagely beat thirteen-year-old Damin O’Rourke into unconsciousness. Words are not sufficient. What action are you taking to see that Damin O’Rourke receives justice?
It is Funny Friday and no one posting on LTEs.
I will not entertain a question that addresses me in such a manner. When you learn how to talk to me in a respectful manner then I will confer with you.
i.e. "you and your black community" "ghetto thugs"...
until then, im officially on lunchbreak!!!

There you have it folks. When confronted with the issue of Black on White crime, the hypocrite MsTyphani, who holds herself out as a leader in her Black community, simply cloaks herself with “See no evil, her no evil speak no evil”. Yet, the hypocrite MsTyphani along with entitlement pimps Al “I Can Scream Louder Than You” Sharpton and Jesse “Do as I say Not As I Do” Jackson among others would be the first to defend Ghetto thugs especially when they are the perpetrators of such crime. Apparently, White America heard Martin Luther King’s words, but Black America did not. While Black America is proficient at quoting King’s words, they fail to understand them. Therefore, I see no reason that any person not of color should ever seek justice for any person of color should he/she be attacked as were Damin O’Rourke. Fair is fair, would not you agree MsTyphani? Fair is fair. Out to lunch indeed.
You guys hear about Hillarys baby bonus announced before a black group?$5000 bond for every kid born here, that should stimulate the illegal invasion.She/they will figure out some way to defeat us. Bring us to our knees like we deserve. lolThey actually think they will have/keep power if that happens. It is true Liberalism is a mental disease.
Hey tippy catch O'reilly last night? JJ was on and some professor that on CNN called Juan Williams his happy negro (twice). You should have enjoyed that. The nerve of him (Juan) suggesting that more then 25% of black people should have fathers in the family.
I did see some of O'reilly last night, missed JJ, but I saw what you are referring to...why do you think I would enjoy two distinguished men of my race pitted against each other for ratings?Thats why i don't really give the media channels much attention...anywho, I aggree with Juan on that issue for it is the truth and Im grateful everyday that I had both parents at home, but i still understand what it is like to not, for many of my friends did not...Thats the difference between you and I ID. I can relate to different cultures becasue I have experienced them...my highschool was 70% white, my college an HBCU...so I can relate to both sides of the fence and that is why I feel credible in my assertions.
I suppose the "draft dodger" selection is on both applications.
John Edwards: 'Pretty Soon' All Young African-American Men Will Be Dead or in Prison... http://campaignspot.nationalreview.com/post/?q=Yjk3OGY3MDI4NjcyMGZjZjhjZTY2NDhmZTlkODhkMWI=Can you imagine if a republican said that?
What he said was:"“We cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem. And the idea that we can keep incarcerating and keep incarcerating — pretty soon we’re not going to have a young African-American male population in America. They’re all going to be in prison or dead. One of the two."No, I can't imagine a Republican showing concern for the number of African Americans in prison. Wasn't Trent Lott majority leader when he said it'd be better if we'd listened to Strom Thurmond and kept segregation?
Live Free or Fred . ...Go Ron Paul ! ! !!

"Tippy if you can't quote accurately learn how to cut and paste."If that was addressed to me, back at ya. I guess it's okay for conservatives to manipulate the context of what politicians say, but not when others do. I used to think you were smart; lately it seems, idgaf, all you can do is call people names like all the other Phil Valentine wannabes. Makes you feel big, does it? Shame, 'cause a mind is a terrible thing to waste.
