Dog burning case continued until January

New witnesses coming forward put off the trial of five juveniles accused of poring gasoline on a pit bull dog and setting it on fire in a vacant house.

Protestors marched outside the Davidson County Juvenile Court Center this morning, carrying signs with slogans like “Justice for Jane Dog.”

The trial was continued until January at the request of the prosecution after new witnesses came forward this morning, according to prosecuting attorney Jon Seaborg.

“We had some developments witness-wise that changed some of the information everyone had about the case – witnesses no one knew about until this morning and late last night,” Seaborg said.

He said he could not discuss specific details of the case, but Animal Control officers confirmed that new evidence has been found and that more time was needed to address that.

The five boys, ranging in age from 9-13, were arrested in June for the burning death of a pit bull near an abandoned house near Hyman Street.

Protestors had been at the courthouse since 8 a.m. holding signs, some reading “Animal Cruelty is a Crime” and “Parents Are Accountable,” in hopes of bringing attention to the case.

“It’s such an important case, it’s such an important issue that needs to be brought to the public,” said protest organizer Stephanie Aichele. “Animal abuse needs to be reported.”

Aichele said the group plans to demonstrate at the next court hearing for the juveniles in Jan. 15.

Allow me to post a copy of an opinion I posted in response to an article in a Missouri newspaper, today.--------------------------------------------- This article about the accused male teacher of elementary grade students goes to prove what I have always maintained in that male teachers should insist on working in classrooms with the "older grades" or grades 8 through 12. A female teacher might abuse younger students as soon as would a man but then that is not what I would have to prove. What i would have to prove is that the older students are capable of determining for themselves whether innapropriate or unacceptable action has come from the teacher (and are acceptable witnesses for Court Room Testimony). I'd be willing to take my chances with the older students (even amid the potential terror of such accusations) which is why I always majored in "Secondary" education as a grad student and Master's candidate (and why I loathe the administrators whom ruined my education career with their dishonest and mafioso tactics).
