Staff reports

Metro police officer Rory O’Ferrell is recovering tonight from injuries he sustained when his parked police cruiser was struck head-on by another vehicle just after 4 p.m.

O’Ferrell, sitting near the intersection of Lewis and North Hill streets in the J.C. Napier public housing project, was completing a police report and had a suspect in the back seat when the crash occurred.

The other driver fled the scene, but was apprehended about a block away. Police suspect he was impaired, and a blood alcohol test will be conducted.

The officer suffered a wrist injury when the car’s air bags deployed. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. The suspect in O’Ferrell’s car was not hurt.

The intersection of Lewis Street and North Hill Street is not in the JC Napier project.

Good thing the police officer wasn't on his bicycle at the time.....or he'd be dead. (hey, just stating an obvious point) It was 4 fricking o'clock in the afternoon, and the driver was "impaired".....Do we really want to encourage people to ride bicycles in town? Sounds more like we need to divert our attention to removing impaired drivers "permanently" from our streets. ;-)
