Update 5 p.m.: TDOT says roadway will reopen by 5:30 p.m.

A fatal crash on Interstate 40 westbound between Nashville International Airport and Briley Parkway snarled traffic on the east side for hours Monday afternoon.

The crash, which claimed the life of Elaine Pfingsten, 34, of Lebanon, closed all westbound lanes for nearly four hours. Traffic was diverted to alternate routes

Police said the crash occurred when Pfingsten, the driver of a Chevrolet Trailblazer, lost control of the SUV in the slush covered far right lane and collided with a Ford F-250 pickup at 1:15 p.m.

Pfingsten died at the scene, police said. Her front seat passenger, Jeta Qose, 36, of Nashville, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she is in critical but stable condition.

The driver of the pickup, Stephen Bowen, 23, of Hermitage, was not injured.

The Tennessee Department of Safety estimates the roadway will reopen by 5 p.m.

Traffic is being diverted to alternate routes.
