Former police chief Turner lands job with Metro Beautification

Former Nashville Police Chief Emmett Turner, who later served in Gov. Phil Bredesen’s administration, recently began working as commission outreach coordinator for the Metro Beautification and Environment Commission.

“We’re very excited about chief Turner being with us now,” said Veronica Frazier, executive director of Metro Beautification. “He’s going to be talking to our neighborhood groups, which is great. They already know him. He knows so many folks.”

According to Metro Human Resources, Turner started the job Jan. 24.

A division of Metro since 1975, Metro Beautification works to make Nashville “clean, safe and attractive,” according to Metro’s website. Metro Beautification, which is part of the Metro Public Works Department, seeks to coordinate the efforts of volunteers, city departments, businesses and community groups to encourage environmental and beautification initiatives, the website says.

Turner headed the Metro Nashville Police Department from 1996 through 2003, serving prior to the arrival of recently departed chief Ronal Serpas. Turner later became Bredesen’s assistant commissioner for fire prevention.

“We have so many volunteers that [Metro Beautification] works with — neighborhood groups and neighborhood associations throughout the county,” Frazier said. “[Turner] will keep them abreast on how we can support their volunteer clean-up efforts with beautification projects.

“Our commissioners are very excited that he’s on board,” she said. “He’s somebody with lots of experience and knowledge of different groups in this city.”

Frazier said Turner is earning $15 an hour with the new position.

Doesn't help the unemployment situation much with so many
Metro Retires how getting part-time(20 hrs or less) jobs that
can then pay whatever amount they please. Retirement wording
needs to be changed to Amount extra earned versus hours
worked before affecting retirement pay! Not a slam against
our Former Chief, just the system and use of taxpayer dollars!

RE: Emmett Turner returning to work at Metro validates the old saying, "It's not what you know; it's WHO you know."

Another word also comes to mind: "Double-dipping."

P.S. I have nothing against Turner personally.

I live in Madison, and embarrased for people to know it..there are areas that are beautiful..and we try hard to maintain the area where we live, but the litter is awful..galatin road is a joke, wish they would show more interest in this zip code!

I, too, live in Madison. It does seem like Madison gets overlooked while many other areas in Nashville get attention. I suppose we were lucky to finally get the much needed police precinct........however, I'm sure it was in response to a soaring crime rate that has been impossible for appropriate authorities to overlook.

The roads around Madison are a disaster (even before all the icy weather), it seems like we are always the last to recieve much needed repaving and/or repairs. And brush pick-up? Forget it.

Oh well, thank goodness we have active and concerned citizens who tirelessly advocate for our needs, or it would probaly be even worse.

I know the former chief. Worked for him when he was chief of the local P.D. I don't understand what he brings to the table except he is a black man who doesn't carry baggage. He wasn't an exceptional chief. Of course he didn't "cook the books" either. He allowed you to do your job. So while he was chief, Nashville officers were allowed to work.

Surely Hizoner could have found a man, or lady, who brings more to the table than just being a good black man. Don't fool yourself, this appointment is ALL about Hizoner's re-election. He needs to know that he has the black community in his pocket and his appointment of Turner and Gordon are just for that purpose. Hizoner is loaded full of cash and doesn't expect to lose a re-election because of a lack of a few black votes.

Thank you, "wasaw." Now I understand.........By hiring Emmett Turner, our sleazy mayor is just attempting to insure that he gets the black vote in the next election.
Dean is so devious.........I pray everybody sees through this latest tactic.
