HCA Healthcare Corp. announced yesterday that Jack O. Bovender Jr. will replace Thomas F. Frist Jr. as chief executive officer and president of the embattled healthcare company. Bovender, a 20-year veteran of the company, leaves his post as chief operating officer to assume lead duties. Frist will remain as chairman of HCA.

James Baker, a healthcare analyst with SunTrust Equitable Securities, believes Bovender has been running the company, in effect, for several years.
