A gut feel about Metro

That sound you hear is hundreds of Metro school buses revving up for another school year. Dr. Pedro Garcia, Metro's new director of schools, is revving up as well.

I had the opportunity to sit down and meet Dr. Garcia a couple of weeks ago and came away duly impressed. Garcia is tall and has a sort of rumpled look about him. It's not a carelessly messy look; rather, it's the look of someone who is too busy and has too much on his mind to worry about sartorial splendor. In short, it's the look of your college English professor.

Indeed, Dr. Garcia does have a lot to do. Dr. Bill Wise, his immediate predecessor, conducted a caretaker administration of Metro schools from his perch on Bransford Avenue, overseeing the transition from a system operating under a decades-old federal court order to a system that is "unitary"
