Staff reports

Nashville Fire Department arson investigators arrested and charged two men Monday in connection with two separate fires on 14th Avenue North.

Investigators believe Scott W. Williams, 44, of Brentwood, owned the two homes that caught fire last year, and that he allegedly hired Corey A. Gaines, 32, to start the fires with flammable liquid so that Williams could collect insurance money.

The fires occurred nearly one year apart — at 1820 14th Ave. N. on May 7,2011, and at 1807 14th Ave. N. on May 2, 2012. One firefighter was injured in the latest fire.

Williams is out on bond for facilitating arson, but Gaines is still in jail facing two arson charges.

Arson for insurance is one of the stupidest crimes a person can commit. The insured person is the obvious suspect from the start and, if there's any help which needs to be provided to the police investigators, the insurance company is happy and eager to provide it. And for the same thing to happen twice in a year? Well, the guy might as well just do it in front of witnesses. Moron.
