Safeties are rare in the fast-paced Arena Football League. Having a quarterback ejected after being knocked to the turf for a safety is rarer still.

But such was the case Friday night.

Los Angeles Avengers quarterback Todd Marinovich reacted so negatively to a call of intentional grounding and the safety that it was necessary for the referees to eject him after he picked up a pair of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Marinovich, making his first start in three games for the Avengers, came out on the field wearing an old pair of high-top Converse basketball shoes and did what he could to incite the crowd of 10,009 fans at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.

Credit lineman Ben Crosland with the hit that put Marinovich over the edge and out of the game with 1:57 left in the first half.
