Limited Medicare options are not good news for senior citizens

There are an estimated 100,000 seniors in Davidson and its contiguous counties. For those 100,000 people, health care is a major, daily concern. One thing those 100,000 people may not know about that could have a huge impact on their health care choices is the federal Balanced Budget Act.

A provision of the federal Balanced Budget Act is calling for much more restrictive enrollment periods for Medicare HMO enrollees beginning January 2002.

Presently, Medicare beneficiaries can change plans monthly. Under the new rule, Medicare beneficiaries will be permitted to make only one change in health plan coverage through June of 2002. Starting in January 2003, the open election period would be further reduced to the three-month period between January and March. Additional changes make verifying the beneficiary
