Metro Police have a man in custody they say robbed a downtown adult bookstore early Thursday morning.

Convicted felon Kevin Butler, 39, is charged with aggravated robbery and assault after allegedly stealing a cash register early from Metro News at 822 Fifth Ave. S.

Butler, who is homeless, entered the business at 12:30 a.m. Police say he grabbed a clerk, held him at knifepoint, and demanded cash. He fled on foot with a cash register.

One store clerk was injured in the incident although he did not require medical attention.

Armed with a good description of the suspect, police arrested Butler a few blocks away at Fourth Avenue South at Oak Street.

The clerk positively identified Butler as the robber, and the stolen register was located behind the business. A knife was recovered inside Metro News.

Butler is charged with aggravated robbery, two counts of aggravated assault and resisting arrest. He was also served with an outstanding warrant for attempted burglary. Butler has previous convictions for aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, theft, domestic assault and vandalism.

He is being held on $360,000 bond.

went to school with Dewayne too. I hope he gets things worked out. He was popular in school and use to be a great guy. I hope the court system will ensure he gets the help he needs. A shame that drugs can ruin someones life. Fortunately he is still young enough to turn things around if he desires.
