An argument in a Madison motel room Monday night sent one man to the hospital, while another faces a charge of attempted criminal homicide.

Charles Woodrome, 29, told detectives that he hit his roommate, Jerry Russell, 53, with a hammer after Russell attempted to rape him. Detectives believe Russell disarmed Woodrome, who then allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed Russell several times. Russell was found sitting in front of a room covered in blood.

Woodrome is being held on $250,000 for a charge of attempted criminal homicide.

Russell was in critical but stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center Tuesday evening.

He hadn’t been interviewed due to his medical condition.
