An unidentified man drowned at Percy Priest Lake Sunday after jumping off a boat sometime after 5 p.m. in an area called Party Cove.

Rescuers searched until midnight for the body, and officials were set to resume looking this morning, according to Mitchell Bailey, spokesman for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). The man jumped from one of 10 or so boats tied together in the cove. A number of boaters witnessed the male struggling in the water and threw him a life preserver, but he was unable to grab it, according to Bailey. A few dove in after him, but he went under before they could get to him. The incident is being classified as a drowning not a boating accident, he said, putting it under the jurisdiction of Metro Police. No police spokesperson was available to comment.
