Maynard heading home to Hoosier state for Obama

Metro Councilman Jerry Maynard (right) is making plans to spend two weeks campaigning for Sen. Barack Obama in Indiana in the weeks leading up to the presidential election.

At-large Councilman Jerry Maynard is planning to hit the road to volunteer for the Barack Obama presidential campaign.

Maynard will dedicate two weeks leading up the election to volunteer most likely in his home state of Indiana, which has become a surprising battleground this election cycle. Maynard is from South Bend, Ind.

“This time, it’s so important,” Maynard said. “I’d like to go to a state that is close so that if I go up there, the energy I bring, if I can just help deliver 100, 200, 1,000 votes, I can make a difference in winning that state for Barack Obama.”

Maynard said he has communicated with the Obama campaign about where his services would be most needed and has been told Indiana is looking like the most likely spot.

“They told me their internal polls are showing it close, within the margin of error,” Maynard said.

Maynard has experience working on campaigns, having served as the state outreach coordinator for John Kerry in 2004 and for Harold Ford Jr.’s Senate run in 2006. Both of those ended in defeat.

“The Obama campaign has changed the way presidential campaigns are run,” Maynard said. “His grassroots approach and use of the Internet, text messaging, blogs and most importantly neighbor-to-neighbor word of mouth.

“He’s built a community where people are talking and saying, ‘I live on your block, in your neighborhood and this is why I’m going to vote for Obama.’ That’s the most powerful campaign technique there is, better than radio or television ads.”

Maynard said he supported Obama enough to volunteer on his campaign because he believes an Obama presidency will benefit Nashville directly.

The first-term Council member pointed to properly funding No Child Left Behind, improving infrastructure and addressing the health care situation, which leaves an estimated 50 million uninsured as three key reasons for his support.

Chicago was recently announced as being one of the most stressful cities in the nation.Body count. In the last six months 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago, 221 killed in Iraq.Sens. Barack Obama & Dick Durbin, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., Gov. Rod Blogojevich, House leader Mike Madigan, Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan, Mayor Richard Daley.....our leadership in Illinois.....all Democrats. Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago. Of course they're all blaming each other. Can't blame Republicans, there aren't any!State pension fund $44 Billion in debt, worst in country. Cook County (Chicago) sales tax 10.25% highest in country. (Look'em up if you want). Chicago school system one of the worst in country. This isthe political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois. He's gonna "fix" Washington politics like he's helped "fix" the Illinoispolitics? Great community organizer. Riiiiiight! Whatever Obama did in Chicago must not have had "sticking" power. So please, Mr. Maynard, stay in Nashville and help us clean up our city before we are a twin city with Chicago.

While I appreciate the time you took to cut and paste the above referenced internet rumor,I have to point out some inaccuracies.Obama is a U.S Senator. He is not responsible for the STATE pension fund debt. The state general assembly and Blogojevich have been locked in battle since the Governors election.Obama was in the state general assembly very briefly and BEFORE Blogojevich took over. For city of over 3 million,I think 292 deaths ( most likely involving drugs) is extremely low.I have spent a great deal of time there this past year and the downtown streets are very safe. The police are tough and the court system tougher. It is shallow and laughable that anyone would blame U.S. Sen. Obama for those killings. Are you holding Lamar Alexander responsible for all killings in metro Nashville and Memphis? Please educate yourself. The rest of us are tired of people who judge a complex and layered situation with a passing glance.

Maynard can not live up to his committments in Nashville - good luck sending him to another state.

It amazes me at how quickly people are to point fingers with blame while sitting at home and watching the world's problems on TV. At least Jerry Maynard is off his sofa and trying to help. This is one of my favorite quotes."If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, then change your attitude. Don't complain." -- Maya Angelou

Well said, lynda!

Good thing Maynard is not a president or elected offical going to Kennebunkport, Key Biscayne or elsewhere. There would be screams of outrage. If Maynard accepts out-of-state money for this junket I am sure the outrage will be zero. Influence peddling scrutiny is limited only to federal candidates with an R in parenthesis.

New Yorker, he's only there to help with the campaign. How's that helping the diplorable problems of Chicago mentioned above.
