Mayor names interim director to lead Metro Law Department

Mayor Karl Dean has named Metro Department of Law Deputy Director Mike Safley the new interim director, picking the 32-year Metro employee as the replacement for Sue Cain, whose final day at the top post is Wednesday.

Safley’s appointment is effective Thursday, Sept. 1, Dean wrote in a memorandum Wednesday. Cain has opted to retire after serving as the director of law since 2007 when Dean was first elected.

“I am confident in Mr. Safley’s knowledge of the law and his ability to serve as the interim director of law for the Metropolitan Government,” Dean wrote. “I am extremely grateful to Mike for accepting this responsibility.”

Dean led the department of law from 1999 through 2007 during then-Mayor Bill Purcell’s administration. Safley has worked at Metro’s legal department for 27 years.

In the memo, Dean gave no indication whether Safley would be considered for the full-time position — stripping away the title of interim — or whether the mayor plans to lead a search for the full-time position.
