Nashville public school students can kick off the new school year in high style this weekend.

This year’s annual Mayor’s First Day Festival includes more than 100 educational booths, four entertainment stages, free school supplies, inflatables and a Guitar Hero tournament at the Sommet Center downtown. An event for teens will include live entertainment and free food at Rocketown.

Funds for the event were contributed by Nashville organizations and businesses, according to a statement from the Mayor’s Office. Metro Nashville Public Schools classes start on Friday of next week for the 2009-2010 school year.

The Sommet Center event for students and families is slated for 2-5 p.m. on Sunday at 501 Broadway. The event for teens is at Rocketown, 401 Sixth Ave. S., and is slated for 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Visit Nashville.gov for more information.
