Meharry Medical College President Dr. Wayne Riley is going on sabbatical, according to a statement issued by Meharry Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Frank Royal.

Cherrie Epps was chosen by the Board of Trustees to serve as interim president in Riley’s absence. Epps, a professor of internal medicine, has held leadership positions at Meharry for 15 years. She previously served as interim president in 2007 before Riley was hired.

Meharry Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communication Janet Caldwell said there would be no more details about Riley’s sabbatical, including how long it will be.

Riley came to Meharry from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
