Jefferson Street is at the center of some of the richest Nashville history.

In Jefferson Street homes and businesses, both black and white citizens gathered to implement plans that moved Nashville closer to civil rights for all its people. The area encompasses the campuses of Tennessee State, Fisk and Meharry, institutions that not only provide outstanding post-secondary and graduate education, but also symbolize the role and legacy of historically black schools.

Despite its rich history, however, the neighborhood still seems to be testing its legs as it engages in an ongoing effort to become an anchor in the community
