Metro eyeing $1.1 million acquisition of land in Antioch for two new schools

Metro Nashville Public Schools is eyeing the acquisition of 25-plus acres in Antioch to accommodate two new schools in the fastest growing part of Davidson County.

The school board Tuesday is set to consider the $1.1 million acquisition of 25.2 acres on Smiths Springs Road, situated within the Antioch High School cluster. The land would be for a future elementary and middle school, though construction dollars would need to be carved out of a future year’s Metro capital plan.

It is still unclear when MNPS would open the new schools, but the district's capital plan calls for the opening of the new elementary school in 2015 and middle school in 2016. Additions are part of MNPS' 10-year plan for the Antioch and Cane Ridge clusters.

Metro this year opened Cane Ridge Elementary School in southeast Davidson County. The district’s projected enrollment for the 2012-13 school year is more than 81,000 students — its largest since 1976. The Antioch area has experienced the majority of Nashville’s population growth over the past decade.

Tuesday’s vote would authorize the office of Metro Public Property Services to execute an option to purchase the Smith Springs Road property, which is near the intersection of Hillshire Drive and the location of YMCA’s Camp Widjiwagan.

According to MNPS officials, two siblings own equal portions of the 25 acres.

The Metro Council would be required to sign off on the final $1.1 million purchase.

This is a very positive step in the right direction for children and parents who deserve a great public education. There are good people everywhere. And there are a great many families on the eastern outskirts that deserve the full benifits that so many take for granted elsewhere. Education lifts all boats. We hope that a broad initiative that includes bus terminations, paved sidewalks, and nutritional programs become a part of a larger plan to bring these visions to fruition and reality. One point one million dollars for 25 acres is like buying the Louisiana purchase. Every home-owner, apartment dweller and realtor must embrace this bargain for great potential it contains!

Let these Citizens Win and the whole county will reap rewards for many many years to come.

Bravo MNPS & Metro
