The Metro Hazardous Devices Unit has gained an $85,000 employee that has no problem with high-risk situations.

The 350-pound tactical hazardous-duty robot, manufactured by REMOTEC Inc. in Oak Ridge, Tenn., will soon be available to assist in life-threatening situations.

The remote-controlled robot will be used to defuse potential explosive devices. Because it can climb stairs and lift up to 50 pounds, it can also be used to assist with negotiator calls and to disarm suspicious packages inside commercial airplanes.
