MLK Magnet makes U.S. News list of America’s top high schools

Nashville’s Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet High School has ranked at No. 32 on a list of America’s top 100 high schools, published by U.S. News and World Report.

MLK is the only Tennessee school on the list. Private schools were not eligible for consideration.

Standardized reading and math test scores, as well as participation and achievement in Advanced Placement courses, factored into the ranking. More than 18,500 high schools in 40 states were considered. The list was announced today with data currently available on the U.S. News Web site, and a story will be run in the print magazine Dec. 10.

MLK is one of three academic magnet schools in the Metro Nashville Public School District. To attend the schools, students must meet certain academic criteria and also be selected through a lottery process. The school has about 500 students in grades seven through 12, and offers a curriculum emphasizing science and math.

Considering how fantastical, useless, & distorted is the U.S. NEWS' college rankings, I worry that their high school rankings may be similar.

With East Literature,Hume Fogg,Martin Luther King,Hillsboro and the private schools taking the best and the brightest,it must be an academic nightmare for the teaching profession in Metro. God pity the poor kid who is not gifted enough to qualify for the magnet school and not financially able to go to a private school, but who really wants an education. This is the kid that is short changed. I remember peer pressure from my youth. This kid is a 1000 to 1 shot to get into college. A 2,000 to 1 shot to graduate from college. This to me is far worse than segregation by race. This is segregation by caste, birth and intellect.

I agree igdaf. Or better yet, mayor Dean, fire Pedro and replace him with the principle of MLK.
