Morality of taxation: how much is too much?

The two hot-button questions before the Tennessee Legislature are: What method of taxation should be exacted on the people of Tennessee; and what should be the rate of this taxation?

These two questions actually carry religious and moral overtones. In essence, the deeper question is: What is the moral basis for exacting taxes upon any people in the first place? Furthermore, what constitutes a fair method of taxation?
