Hours before the Board of Education will consider a revised school district rezoning plan, leaders of the Nashville branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced intentions to seek expert assistance for creation of an alternative plan.
Marilyn Robinson, president of NAACP Nashville, told reporters gathered at a press conference that her organization is in the running for a technical assistance grant from the Ford Foundation. The grant would bring expert guidance from educational specialists, who would advise Nashville in creating a zoning plan that would, in theory, prevent concentrations of economically disadvantaged and minority students.
“We’re saying, wait. Defer. Hold up,” Robinson said. “This is moving in the wrong direction, and it’s the equivalent of adding insult to injury.”
State Representative Brenda Gilmore, as well as Metro Council members Erica Gilmore and Lonnell Matthews, were among those who spoke in opposition to the plan.
Brenda Gilmore said she believes there is no group in Nashville supportive of the plan, other than the task force and part of the “business community.”
“It will move Nashville back 50 years,” she said.
NAACP members will speak tonight at the board meeting. School board members Ed Kindall and George Thompson have said they plan to discuss the NAACP’s position as well.
Tonight members of a community task force for student assignment will propose a revised rezoning plan for school board consideration. The board meeting begins at 5 p.m., and will take place at the Metro Nashville Public Schools central office, 2601 Bransford Ave.
"prevent concentrations of economically disadvantaged and minority students."Are they representing the WHITE MINORITY?That minority crap don't fly anymore since "colored" are the majority. They need to be called on it and thrown out of the office with that race/discrimination crap.
id, I disagree. Have you looked closely at the US census data lately. Minority is still minority in this country and will be for a very very long time. White Americans still make up about 70% of the US population. Furthermore, look at any corporate boardroom and Forbes' list of most wealthiest Americans and you'll see where the disadvantages still exist. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not making any excuses for minorities because NOW opportunities exist for everybody. There are still hurdles, of course, but there are laws in place to combat discrimination. I know you are tired of minorities screaming "disadvantaged
And believe me when I say that most minorities that I know don't want to be in this country no more than you want us to be here. I can not wait until the day I can leave the United States and never step foot back in this country again. If I could convince my parents to move, I'd leave today.
The last three articles in this paper had the white as a minority IN SCHOOL which we are talking about. You are right about the general population but not the specific. We can't afford all this busing. (and buses)
If the NAACP truly wants to make a change it would encourage it's own members to take a more active role in their children's education. That would certainly help solve many of the problems our schools are currently facing. My children currently attend West End Middle...and the one thing that sets West End far above most other MNPS schools is the level of parental involvement. All races and creeds participate in the school functions in a MAJOR way. I love it. Once again the NAACP is placing the blame where it doesn't belong. Personal responsibility is the key to solving just about every problem.
