A Nashville cab driver suspected of raping a 27-year-old Franklin woman last November was booked into a Davidson County jail Thursday evening.

Joseph Newton, 46, was arrested May 14 in New York City as he arrived back in the U.S. from Ghana, Africa. In a release last month, police said DNA analysis by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's Crime Laboratory linked Newton to semen recovered form the victim.

The attack allegedly happened inside Newton’s Allied cab near Hillsboro Pike and Interstate 440 early on Nov. 18, 2009, after the victim had gone to several bars in the Vanderbilt/Hillsboro Village area.

She told police she was extremely intoxicated when she got into the minivan taxi, and instead of taking her where she wanted to go, the cab driver drove down 21st Avenue, stopping on a dark side street near I-440.

According to an arrest warrant, the victim identified Newton as the suspect from a photo lineup in March. Police said Newton denied assaulting the victim.

Newton remains in jail on $50,000 bond. He is set to appear in court next week.

Fortunately, this type of serious crime is almost unheard being committed by a cab driver. Ironically it's usually the drivers that are victim of some type of crime, especially at night. I know Nashville cabbies go through a thorough background check to get a permit. But just like any other job (e.g. crooked cops or molesting school teachers) there will be some bad ones that get in.
