Nashville trails many Southern cities in black population rise

Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 10:05pm

It’s no secret that Nashville is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. Since 1990, the city’s Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern and African populations have each exploded, rendering Music City an international place of sorts. Davidson County is now home to more than 60,000 Hispanics and 19,000 Asians. Twenty years ago, those populations were minuscule in comparison.

Also during the last two decades, a demographic reality unfolded locally involving black Americans — a change lost amid the International City hype. While African-American populations in other Southern cities boomed, weaving a tale of reclamation in the New South, the story is far from the same in Nashville.

During the past 20 years, African-Americans have moved by the hundreds of thousands from various parts of the United States — often from cities in the North and Midwest — to the South in what has amounted to a reverse of the “Great Migration” of the early 20th century, when blacks fled the embattled South for a better life elsewhere. Since 2000, in the country’s black population, 75 percent of growth was in the South, up from 65 percent during the previous decade, according to U.S. Census data. Also during the last decade, major metro areas in the North, particularly New York and Chicago, posted their first declines in black population since at least 1980.

In some cities of the greater South — particularly Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston Miami, Orlando and Tampa — the rise in African-American populations has been nothing short of stunning. Atlanta now has the second-largest black population among all U.S. cities, having passed Chicago in the past few years and trailing only New York City. From 2000 to 2010, many Southern cities — particularly in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina — saw their African-American populations increase by at least 20 percent and, in some cases, a considerably higher percentage. In Tennessee, the black population in Memphis, always significant, increased further.

During the same 10-year period, Nashville’s black population grew a healthy but still modest 19 percent, from approximately 146,000 to about 174,000.

Cathy Yang Liu, assistant professor Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, said climate (particularly for the elderly), proximity to the East Coast, cultural dynamics and jobs combine to influence African-Americans’ choices when relocating to the South from other parts of the country.

“Orlando, Miami, Charlotte and Atlanta all fit that criteria [more so than Nashville],” said Liu, who has studied the phenomenon of blacks moving to Atlanta. “There could be several reasons blacks are migrating to some Southern cities and not [as much to Nashville],” acknowledging that getting at the motivations behind the moves is far more difficult territory than the numbers themselves.

African-Americans’ re-embrace of the South is part of an overall trend involving people of various ethnic and racial groups moving to Sun Belt cities. Regardless of the reasons, which tend to be speculative at best, the numbers are noteworthy.

According to recently released 2010 statistics from the U.S Census Bureau, of the 20 largest cities in 11 Southeastern states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia), only two — Lexington and Louisville — are “less black” than Nashville by the percentage of African-Americans compared with their greater populations.

Black population changes are not solely the result of migration, but that factor looms large within the dynamic. Orlando is a strong example: Much of the Florida city’s African-American population growth the past 10 years was due to an influx of black newcomers.

In 2000, Orlando’s geographically small city limits were home to about 50,000 African-Americans. In 2010, the number was 66,000, a 34 percent increase. Orlando to Nashville is not an apples-to-apples comparison — Nashville-Davidson County encompasses about 525 square miles, while the City of Orlando is only 100. But in a general sense, the black populations of Southeastern cities such as Charlotte, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham and Tampa — all cities, like Nashville, that did not historically have hugely significantly African-American populations such as those of Atlanta or New Orleans — are growing rapidly.

That Orlando, a city with no African-American heritage of note, is luring blacks more than Nashville — with our triumvirate of Fisk University, Meharry Medical College and Tennessee State University, and our status as a history-rich center of black business and culture — is striking.

With Nashville attracting all types of newcomers — from the white music executive from California to the Mexican-American construction worker from Texas to the Indonesian-American computer technician from Illinois — why do blacks migrating to the South seemingly prefer to relocate to cities other than Nashville?

jeff obafemi carr, director of the city’s Amun Ra Theatre and a local pop culture critic, filmmaker and actor, said he is often asked when he travels around the country if Nashville is receptive to blacks looking to relocate. He said Charlotte, among others, has a much better perception than Nashville.

“There is a perception problem, and some of it is rooted in reality,” said carr, who is African-American. “There is a diverse culture of music here, but unfortunately, it’s still not branded by the city as a diverse music culture.”

Rosetta Miller-Perry, founder of the Greater Nashville Black Chamber of Commerce and publisher of the Tennessee Tribune, agreed with carr that there is a perception problem. She noted that Charlotte has a vibrant and cosmopolitan feel that attracts both young blacks and whites — and that has created a buzz in various black communities in cities nationwide.

“It blew me away,” Miller-Perry, who is African-American, said of a recent visit to Charlotte. “It reminded me of Atlanta and New York.”

It’s difficult to compare population figures from city to city. The census bureau includes statistics from both city limits and metropolitan statistical areas. Geographical boundaries can vary wildly from place to place. Also, some cities annexed large landmasses between 2000 and 2010, distorting their populations from the decennial census 10 years ago to the most recent count.

But in a general sense, the following figures (given as approximations) are helpful:

• The City of Charlotte had 177,000 black residents in 2000 and 256,000 in 2010, an
increase of 45 percent.

• The City of Raleigh boasted an African-American population of 76,000 in 2000.
By 2010, the figure was 118,000, an increase of 54 percent.

Dan Cornfield, a Vanderbilt University sociology professor, said another key statistic to consider is Nashville’s percentage of blacks related to the overall population. The figure as of 2010 was about 27 percent, basically unchanged from 2000.

“What did change at above-average rates for Davidson County between 2000 and 2010 is the percentage of foreign-born residents,” Cornfield said.

That change could explain, in part, why the percentage of blacks did not increase. Still, and in contrast, many of the previously listed Southeastern cities saw their percentages of black residents in relation to their overall populations rise at least somewhat from 2000 to 2010.

“The question I get — from both blacks and whites — when I go places to work on a project or shop a product, particularly in New York and L.A.,” carr said, is ‘Why are you still in Nashville?’ ”

Equating the NAACP with the KKK could be a contender for stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Congratulations GUARDIAN!

But seriously GUARDIAN, how did you even make it this far in life? What with all the cross burnings and lynchings the NAACP was perpetrating while you were growing up. I especially hate the way that they used the existing black power structure to marginalize the white population in the South for so many years after the Civil Rights Act had already passed. I remember my granddaddy used to tell us the horror stories of being made to drink at the 'whites only' water fountain... shameful!

richgoose, in time Boo. In time. Are you trying to hurry up and get rid of me? My feelings are really hurt. I love Paris, but Italy feels like home. Besides, the men in Italy are hotter than fist grease.

Wow! An article about nothing but statistics that don't really mean anything sure stirred up the pot. The tone of the article though seems to be that there is some conspiratorial reason for the low rate of growth of the black population. And, it looks like a lot of people took the bait.
Personally, I don't care what the racial makeup of Nashville is as long as the people that come and go do so of their own free will, without government coercion or reward. JustOnePerson'sOpinion

Why should a man be degraded for not wanting to live/go to school/deal with the culture of any other man? Why do we suppose that something is wrong or bad if one doesn't want to associate with some others of the human race? Why is a Negro man allowed to live within his own neighborhood and culture without question when a white man is not? Why is a Latino family allowed to live many families to a home not designed for more than two, with no question? Why do some seem to not care if all have the burden of more expenses because of those who come without an invitation? Why? Why is it that after the 1964 Civil Rights Act the public school system started to deteriorate? Why did the white middle class move to the suburbs? Why did the hate seem to come out after this noble experiment? Could it be that the experiment was a failure? Could it be that man doesn't want any entity to tell with whom he can associate,.like or have his children influenced by? Could it be that he doesn't like the way you behave, the believes that you hold, the thoughts that you espouse and not the color of your skin? Sometimes I stop and step back to see the whole of the canvas that we have painted and see that many of our brush strokes may have been misapplied.

Everybody jump on JayBlow......but the facts are the facts. You bleeding hearts cannot name one city in the US, heck lets make it easier THE WORLD, with a majority black population or black majority politically that is not a run down, corrupt s**thole. It's because of White appologist, like most you on this board, that blacks aren't ready for primetime, socially or economically. Kudos to NewYorker1, you made it my friend. Having a M.Arch II myself, I know Arch School is no joke, but you are the exception, not the rule.

My kids go to private schools under the guise of wanting the best education I can provide for them, it has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with the distractions that come with the "free" education here in Nashville, whether that distraction be from the students or the NEA/TEA freeloaders posing as teachers.

You truly want a melting pot, then lets cut out all the PC BS and start holding everyone to the SAME standard. You're not special because you're black, brown or yellow, just as I am not because I am white.

By: Loner on 3/28/11 at 6:16

My heart isn't bleeding, but I'll field that challenge from RUSerious...he wrote, "You bleeding hearts cannot name one city in the US, heck lets make it easier THE WORLD, with a majority black population or black majority politically that is not a run down, corrupt s**thole".

I think that Jahannesburg South Africa has a black majority population and is not a run down, corrupt s**thole.

Here's a snippet from a credible source:

"Around 73% of the population of Johannesburg is natives, 16% of whites, and the remaining 10% include 6% people of mixed ethnic origins and 4% of Asians."

Of course, it takes an A-hole to define a s**thole, go ahead and tell us what you mean by "s**thole"...RUSerious.

By: Loner on 3/28/11 at 6:35

JudyBoody asks a bunch of race-based rhetorical questions that are just too silly to address. Her defense of xenophobia is entertaining and her punchline is perfect...."Sometimes I stop and step back to see the whole of the canvas that we have painted and see that many of our brush strokes may have been misapplied....that sounds like Junior Bush talking....LOL.

By: on 3/28/11 at 7:39

Silly, really Loner. The questions still remain. If you can't answer them, that's OK but don't try your usual degrading of the writer to cover up your inabilities. And if you can only come up with one city worldwide that answers RUSeriors question and feel that you negated his post then you've been drinking to much of your own cool aid. And as for your lack of knowledge of what a s**thole is, you, I, and everyone else here would know it if we saw it. N.Y. comes to mind.

By: RUSerious on 3/28/11 at 7:48

@Loser....ooops I mean Loner, prob not the first time you've heard that. And for the record it's Johannesburg with an O not an A, but as a member of the Illiterate elite, I'm sure you've recognized your error.

Is that the best you can come up with ? Again those pesky facts: Ave income >$4500/yr, 7% completely illiterate, 37% unemployment, 15% have a primary education, ranked 1st in rapes per capita, car jackings and crimes against commercial farmers...... But here's the kicker is they are ranked highest the WORLD for child and baby rape, not to mention the murder rate.

Who knows Loner maybe that's your idea of utopia ? I'm gonna guess Johannesburg, with an O, would qualify as a S**thole.

By: on 3/28/11 at 8:02

Wow Loner, facts are a bitch, huh. Guess if your gonna toss them around you better be sure they're not going to undermine you position. Got any answers to my questions yet?

By: Loner on 3/28/11 at 9:52

As I said, it takes an A-hole to define a s**thole, RUSerious defined the parameters for us.

Yes, the loner-loser play on words is well-worn and stale....keep trying, I appreciate your efforts at creating a creative ad hominem.

Yup, you done got me on the spelling of Spellcheck on my end...I'll watch for your typos, grammatical flub-a-dubs etc. Remember, you started in with the pedantic and trivial crap, RUSerious.

In your 6:48 post, you typed in "appologist", did you mean "apologist"?

In that same smug post you typed in "lets make it easier", followed by "lets cut out"; did you mean "let's make it easier" and "let's cut out"? An apostrophe is needed to form a contraction. Holding a Masters in Architecture, you ought to now this basic stuff, RUSerious.

There, i rubbed your snooty snotty nose in your own verbal droppings...enjoy!

By US standards, Johannesburg is in fact a world standards its more like an armpit, than a shit-hole. Is it a shit-hole because of the blacks, or in spite of them?

And Judy, I got yer answer, RIGHT HERE!!

By: DREIFMA on 3/29/11 at 1:27

Who bloody cares? From what I have seen of New Orleans, downtown Memphis, downtown Atlanta, East St Louis, down town St Louis, etc etc etc, thats a good thing. I suppose we cant wait to get our graduation rates in metro Nashville from the 40% to the 20%.

By: on 3/29/11 at 6:31

What? where, no that can't be the answer it's to small, just a speck. Maybe that's it, no, that's just an iota. Oh well Loner maybe it's just to small to see with the naked eye. But I've seen ad's in the back of some magazines that can help someone like yourself. You've seen 'em "Gain inches where she really wants them", you know the ones. There's help out there, and lord knows bleeding hearts such as yourself that feel compelled to apologize for your ancestors wrongs desperately need it.

By: Antisocialite on 3/29/11 at 7:35

Ahh, the blatant racism of and RUSerious.

Look everybody, this is why I love free speech!

Because anybody in the world can come onto this site and see what wretched people they are. So that anyone can see the vapidity, vacuousness, and vitriol that these fools type about people with skin color different from their own, as if they were a 'race' other than human. So that anyone with even a modicum of critical thought can see how derivative, and trite their so-called 'facts' are. Facts which so conveniently leave out the background narrative, which tells of the wholesale rape of the entire continent of Africa by people with white skin.

No doubt these same fools will come after this comment, relentlessly picking at the sparse grammatical mistakes like the grotesque vultures that they are, unable to muster any rebuttal aside from ad hominem attacks and puerile logic. I welcome it, I welcome any chance to put on the record more of their weak reasoning, and hateful bile. If only to show the few who may still be saved from this racist thinking how bankrupt it truly is.

By: shinestx on 3/29/11 at 7:46

So what's the problem? Sounds like the black populations in Southern cities grew over the past ten years. Good for them! Good for us! Good for the South! Good for everyone except those who (for some reason like Mr. Cornfield, the writer, some posters here find a problem with not enough blacks moving to Nashville, in particular. You libbies are downright comical when you find the perfect problem that justifies some sort of deeper dissatisfaction inside you. Of course, it also sould be a sign that your coalition is coming unglued. Not suprisingly, many of them on this board sound unglued too (e.g. those who buy into wild conspiracies that the Joooos cause all our problems). Admittedly, it's always an eye-opener to read comments from progressive-leftist wind-spitters who can't seem to get past blaming everyone and everything that they hate (e.g. Christians, Jews, the USA).

So when is it ever the fault of the muslimes that they can't even get along with the various factions within their religion? When is it ever the fault of the Dem-wits (always G.W.B's fault) when any ethnic group in Northern cities did not plant deeper community roots and therefore found themselves -- yet again-- moving en masse back to the cities/states from which their forebears came? When is it the fault of liberal/progressive-socialist/leftist policies exacerbated by racist unions (until they discovered the convenience of using blacks to support their policies)? When is it ever the fault of the blacks that they haven't brought up their income levels to those of immigrant groups only one generation removed from American citizenship? Are those cities now less diverse because their black populations actually increased vis-a-vis other groups? Hmmmm... I would think diversity is diversity. Or is being more black simply being more diverse? How does the info in this article jibe with an article that came out last week about blacks moving out of cities? Are most of these blacks going to Charlotte and Atlanta and Orlando and Houston to start businesses like NewYorker, or are they following the jobs? Do the libbies ever pause to think that maybe it's the private sector that actually is helping these black citizens rise above their modest circumstances (after all, the states where this influx is occurring are conservative states which are actually becoming more conservative)? Sadly no! We don't get any such introspection from the libbies on this board and those who write articles for large newspapers. But then, that wouldn't reallly support their agenda, would it?

By: shinestx on 3/29/11 at 7:58

Oh, and somebody help me out... but wasn't there an article in the past few days that mentioned Nashville is in the top 3 cities for minority entrepreneurship? If I recall, that put Nashville above all those cities mentioned. So then, maybe Nashville is in fact getting a higher educated, more innovative (which tends to mean smaller segments of any overall population) group of blacks like NewYorker (despite her naive and simplistic liberal politics) and Mr. carr (or is it mr. carr j/k?).

Well there 'ya go AntiS, the questions are still out there, you want to take as shot at answering them? Loner seemed to disappear, so maybe you can slide on in on that blood coming for your leaking heart and take a stab at it. If there is any blame to be bandied about, I propose that it lies with the founders of "The Great Society". The white man has done more to hinder the development of the black man in this country in the last 60 years then the KKK could have ever done. Decades of entitlements, two generations of down and out folk who have been kept there by to much giving and not enough bootstrapping. Somehow people like you think that coddling, giving to much and constant looking the other way will help. When the reality is that it has produced a underclass of mega proportions. When I was a youngster the black community was alive and vibrant. They didn't seem to feel a need to have the same figurative real estate as the white community, they had their own and it was as good as ours, different but just as good. People married before having children and if they didn't they raised their children, not putting them on extended family to bear the burden. Go ahead, AntiS, salve your inner demons some more at the expense of those whom you say you care about so much. Call those of us who disagree with the failed policies of the past if you want, but I can only refer you to examine the trends of the present.

By: Antisocialite on 3/29/11 at 8:40 the fact that you would place an issue as complex as this squarely at the feet of Great Society programs just shows the extreme lack of critical thought you consistently exhibit. Oh by the way, this little gem,"When I was a youngster the black community was alive and vibrant. They didn't seem to feel a need to have the same figurative real estate as the white community, they had their own and it was as good as ours, different but just as good," reads like you pining for the days of 'separate but equal,' a racist canard that most sensible people stopped advocating forty years ago... how retro of you judy!

By: on 3/29/11 at 10:17

Is that all 'ya got Aunte Em? So this issue is to complex for 'ya huh. Well just climb down from that do-gooder tower and look around O'savior of mankind. See what a mess you and your like thinking buddies have done to this particular segment of society. You don't need to take my word for it, just look. Don't resort to calling me names or trite euphemisms, just look at what you have done! G.W.B. didn't do it, the middle class small business man didn't do it, you can't even blame the military industrial complex. Nope it lies squarely on the shoulders of the white libbs and the Jessie Jacksons of the world for the last 60 yrs. Nosiree, if the glove don't fit then you must take responsibility, just a bit..

Oh, I just purchased a brand new sports car here in Nashville. I wish I had purchased it in Atlanta or Charlotte so those cities could get the sales taxes. I wouldn't want to continue to destroy your city. I'll consider that the next time I make large purchases.

I'll wait until I go to Atlanta, Chicago, or home to New York to buy clothing and furniture. I wouldn't want to help keep some of these businesses in Nashville going and destroy them.

By: serr8d on 3/29/11 at 5:25

It was just a week and a half ago that Charles M. Blow editorialized (Escape From New York, ) with his usual near-apoplectic tone that blacks were fleeing The City because...

But to the soup of reasons and recriminations I would like to add one more possible factor that must be considered if not studied: the hyper-aggressive police tactics that have resulted in a concerted and directed campaign of harassment against the black citizens of this city. ...

If this is even part of the reason blacks are fleeing from, or simply not coming to, our great metropolis, then the city, knowingly or not, is engaged in its own subtle form of ethnic cleansing — a sort of eradication by intimidation.

Remember Jimmy McMillan, the candidate running for NY governor 2010, he of the famous tagline?

"The rent is too damned high!"

Now, Blow, "The cops are too damned mean!". Gotta love these New Yorkers.

But the reason I think blacks are fleeing these old, crumbling burgs is that they are finally realizing that Lyndon Baines Johnson's 'Great Society' program has failed. Sorry, antisocialite, you LeftLibProgg dirty socialists attack dog you, it's the fault of LBJ and his desire to lock in a (few dozen) generations of moocher voters for the Democratic party. The Great Society has utterly and unequivocally failed. From American Thinker ( ...

The actual consequences of Johnson's Great Society were disastrous for blacks, discouraging initiative, encouraging a sense of entitlement and victimhood, and creating a permanent dependency class. Until 1965, 82% of black households had both a mother and a father in the home -- a statistic on par with or even slightly higher than white families. After 1965 (the year the Democrats and President Johnson decided it was time to stop oppressing blacks and start "helping" them), the presence of black fathers in the home began a precipitous decline; today, the American black out-of-wedlock birthrate is at 69%.

Unlike its socialist cousin (the New Deal), the Great Society emerged in a period of prosperity. Johnson presented his goals for the Great Society in a speech at an elite liberal public university, the University of Michigan, in May 1964. So-called "do-gooder liberals," having little faith in their common man, loved its aims. The elitist "White Guilt" (see Shelby Steele's book of the same name) resulted in terrible long-term impacts. Soon after, the programs were heavily criticized by conservatives as being ineffective and creating an underclass of lazy citizens. They have been proven correct. Current evidence makes Johnson the villain. If he were alive today to see the effects, he'd cringe.

Socialism clearly makes individuals worse. Incalculable damage has been done to the black family by the neo-socialist policies begun under Johnson, which are a perverted form of what Eisenhower wisely began a decade prior.

There's no need to wonder why blacks are fleeing the large (northern, liberal) urban cities. If you wonder why they don't come to Nastyville, well, I blame Hee Haw.

By: serr8d on 3/29/11 at 5:29

Loner, you're the only poster in this thread who's mentioned the Jews. If I didn't know better, I'd say you were obsessed with 'em. ;D

By: serr8d on 3/29/11 at 5:43

Oh, Thomas Sowell, today, hits it out of the park ( ...

Among blacks who moved, the proportions who were in their prime — from 20 to 40 years of age– were greater than in the black population at large, and college degrees were more common among them than in the black population at large. In short, with blacks, as with other racial or ethnic groups, those with better prospects are leaving the states that are repelling their most productive citizens in general with liberal policies.

Detroit is perhaps the most striking example of a once thriving city ruined by years of liberal social policies. Before the ghetto riot of 1967, Detroit’s black population had the highest rate of home-ownership of any black urban population in the country, and their unemployment rate was just 3.4 percent.

It was not despair that fueled the riot. It was the riot which marked the beginning of the decline of Detroit to its current state of despair. Detroit’s population today is only half of what it once was, and its most productive people have been the ones who fled.

Treating businesses and affluent people as prey, rather than assets, often pays off politically in the short run– and elections are held in the short run. Killing the goose that lays the golden egg is a viable political strategy.

As whites were the first to start leaving Detroit, its then mayor Coleman Young saw this only as an exodus of people who were likely to vote against him, enhancing his re-election prospects.

But what was good for Mayor Young was disastrous for Detroit.

There is a lesson here somewhere, but it is very doubtful if either the intelligentsia or the politicians will learn it.

Williams is concerned that blacks aren't coming to Nashville. It may be because Nashville is much like that what they are leaving: a too-progressive town with some of the same political mindset that blacks desire to flee.

That, and NASCAR. And Hee Haw.

Few watch aficionados realize that the Japanese brand seiko watch has a history as old as many of its Swiss rivals. Founded in the 1880s, the company began manufacturing wrist seiko watches after World War I and quickly became an innovative leader, developing one of the world's first seiko automatic and seiko chronograph. But perhaps Seiko's greatest achievement came about in its race with the American brand Bulova to harness new technology, leading to the quartz watch, which revolutionized the industry and nearly drove the Swiss out of business.
More innovations followed, including the first computer wristwatch, in 1984, and the first nonbattery seiko kinetic watch. To this list we can now add another groundbreaker: the Seiko Spring Drive mechanical movement, which is accurate to one second per day, making it approximately three times more precise than the average mechanical watch. The Spring Drive also provides an enduring seventy-two hours of power reserve (most watches offer about forty) and winds 30 percent faster than a conventional movement.
According to seiko uk, twenty-eight years of work went into developing this movement, and only five of the company's hundreds of watchmakers possess the requisite skills to assemble it. Regardless of its technological history, the seiko 5 is a skillfully designed watch, with graceful hands and interesting use of off-center dials.
