Nashville's Russ fails in XFL bid

Former Montgomery Bell Academy punter and kicker Andy Russ is getting closer and closer to his professional football dream.

This time he was so close he could have darn near reached out and kicked it.

Russ, who spent the 1998 preseason in the then-Tennessee Oilers training camp and the summer of 2000 with the New York Jets, was among the late cuts of the Birmingham Thunderbolts of the XFL on Thursday.

Russ, who averaged 46.5 yards per punt as a senior at Mississippi State and was the Hula Bowl MVP in 1997 with four field goals, was dropped from the Thunderbolts
