The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is investigating a spill of clay material stemming from the installation of a Piedmont Natural Gas line in South Nashville.

Piedmont notified TDEC of the spill on Wednesday after they had an “inadvertent return” on the line installation near Edmondson Pike and Huntington Place, according to a TDEC press release.

The clay material entered Sevenmile Creek.

TDEC officials arrived at the site on Wednesday and determined that the leak came from drilling at the worksite. The contractors working on the drilling used hay bales to dam the material from leaking further. Clean-up on the site started Wednesday afternoon.

TDEC spokeswoman Meg Lockhart said the department would continue to investigate and ensure that the clean-up was thorough. There was no update on the incident as of Friday afternoon.
